NOTES
SCHOOL PICTURES
Order envelopes for school pictures went home with students last week. Please complete and return them (even if you don't plan to order prints, write a note saying so) to Krystal's office as soon as possible, before picture day . Pictures will be taken on Friday, October 12.
FALL YARD SALE
The annual Yard Sale is this Saturday, October 6 and our parent organizers are in the final stages of preparation. Please consider how you can contribute:
  • Sale Donations: Please donate unwanted items to our sale. You'll see signs on the porch of the barn and under the white tent that will help us presort books, clothing, etc, please put your donations accordingly. All donations must be received before 3:30 pm on Friday. Please do not donate electronics, VHS or cassette tapes, or furniture made from particleboard; these items don't sell well and are expensive for us to dispose of, lowering our fundraising power.
  • Student and Adult Volunteers for Friday or Saturday Shifts: You can sign up for a volunteer shift at this website, where we're organizing our shift schedule this year. In particular we are looking for help with the clean-up shift, which is a great one for children or adults who just want to be told to carry something or sweep something. Many hands make that tiresome work at the end of a long day easier.
GUS YERKES
Seventh grader Gus Yerkes was in an accident over the weekend with a side-by-side ATV. He was wearing a helmet, but was pinned under the vehicle and suffered skull fractures; he was taken to DHMC where he had surgery. As of Monday morning his brain scan was "normal," and he was awake and responsive. The Yerkes circle of friends and family is taking good care of Jamie, Polly, Ruby, and Lila today. We know the Riverside community will want to lend a hand as well, please stay tuned to messages from us about how you can help.
SOCCER
This week's schedule:
  • Monday practice for 5-6 Team, 3:15-4:30
  • Tuesday practice CANCELLED due to rain and to support the Yerkes
  • Thursday, Oct. 4 at home vs. Waterford 5-6th gr at 4:00, 7-8th gr at 5:00
SWIMMING
Please remember to pick up 4-6th grade students at the NVU pool this Friday at 3:15. We will not be swimming next week, October 12 because the pool is closed for Fall Break; we will be swimming on the following Fridays: October 19, 26, and November 2.
AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS
Nelia is gathering information about student interests and parent volunteers. Is there an after-school club you would like to make happen at Riverside? Film Making? Chess? Yoga? Origami? Please contact Nelia to discuss goals, students involved, time of year, resources needed, etc. We hope to share a list of club offerings within the next few weeks.
OKTOBERFEST FRIEND RAISER
We hope you received an invitation by email with a request to RSVP to Krystal if you plan to attend. We look forward to seeing you at this fun event.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS
We would appreciate having the names of parents who are willing to substitute for teachers who are sick or doing professional development. If you are comfortable managing groups of Riversiders, please contact Michelle and feel free to specify: best age group, best subject areas, whether you're willing to be asked at the last minute, etc. You will be required to be fingerprinted and complete a background check.
BIOGRAPHY FAIR
Most students are embarking on major research projects in their social studies classes. We look forward to seeing, hearing and celebrating all that they’ve learned at our Biography Fair event on the morning of November 2. Parents of all students are encouraged to attend any portion of that event that they can, details will follow. Look for details about project work in the Lesson Plans sections below.
BASKETBALL OPPORTUNITY
Good Shepherd Catholic School is looking for basketball players and invites Riverside students to play on their teams. They anticipate having three teams this year: boys 5/6, boys 7/8, and girls 6/7/8. Interested players should contact Lynn Cartularo, principal, at  lcartularo@goodshepherdschoolvt.org  or 802-751-8223 for more information.
