Medfield Afterschool Program
Jump Start, Kindergarten, and First Grade Newsletter
October 2018
Dear MAP Families,
What an exciting time of year it is for the children (and you too!). New schedules, teachers, friends, etc… We hope that your transition into MAP is going well
and that everyone is settling in to the new routine!

MAP is a busy place, especially at drop off & pick up times! If you have any questions or concerns and want to talk to me or a teacher to get some feedback, we would be happy to make some time to talk. You can reach us by phone (508) 359-2165 or

Please be sure to let MAP know about absences, special pick-ups, or any changes
to your child’s MAP schedule. You can always call, email, put a note in our communication notebook located next to the sign in/sign out notebook, or put a note in the container on top of the parent mailboxes.

E-mailing me is another great way to keep MAP informed. If you choose e-mail, please know that I will always e-mail you back promptly . However if you don’t get a reply e-mail and it is a time sensitive issue (absence, special pick up, etc…), please always follow up with a call to the program, as I am not always at my desk or in the office.

The green dismissal slips are intended for school use only, and they will not
notify MAP if your child has a change in schedule on his or her MAP day. We will need a phone call or email letting us know not to be looking for them at dismissal time. Don't forget to program MAP’s number into your cell phone
(508) 359-2165. Thank you for your help with this!

Remember that the MAP Family Handbook, Calendar, Newsletters, and lots of great information are all on our web site. It is a great resource for everything there is to know about MAP! We also send out a great deal of information via e-mail. If you have not received e-mails from MAP before, please e-mail me at [email protected] or Gaye Shannon, our Executive Director at [email protected] and we will add you to the list.  If you do not have
e-mail or web access, please let us know, so we can provide you with paper copies in your MAP family mailbox.

For billing questions, please call or e-mail Gaye at the
Main Office (508) 359-0003 or e-mail [email protected] .

Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter!

Sincerely,
Meghan

Jump Start & ½ Day Kindergarten at MAP
Welcome to our new and returning families!!

September was a get to know you and MAP month. The kids played fun games to get to know each other, the teachers and the MAP room.  They have been busy making new friends and reconnecting with old friends. We had a week of Makers workshop where we made a road to save zoo animals, tested out bridge building, designed our own book, made Lego boats, built marble roller coasters, and created recyclable art. During our "What I Love About" week, we showed the kids some of the things we love to teach about. The kids did a great piece of art pretending to be a human Spirograph. They also experienced some Glow in the Dark fun! We ended the month with everything Fall! We reviewed the seasons, taste tested apples, learned about leaves, pumpkins, football and what we LOVE about Fall. The kids also had fun walking outside with a Fall Scavenger Hunt. They found acorns, pine cones, and different color leaves. We are looking forward to October, which is Science Month!

Afternoons at MAP Kindergarten & First Grade
MAP is off to a great start and the children are having fun! Outdoor play is a highlight for the children after spending many hours indoors. The weather has been beautiful and we are taking advantage of every minute! The “monkey bars” and “spider climber” are great and the children love the challenges of climbing and swinging from each one.

Some of the popular afternoon projects have been:
  • fuse bead projects, water colors, paper airplanes, drawing, bookmarks, and friendship bracelets.
  •  The kids loved the indoor MAP scavenger hunt! They had to search for stop signs, cars, trucks, and speed limit signs!
  •  Summer Send Off Day had some kids run the Beach obstacle course - emptying their beach bag, laying on their towel, reciting “Cape Cod” 5 times- saying “Oh no I forgot my sunscreen!” .. and getting “blue” sunscreen, “swimming”, jumping pool noodles and finally leaping over sharks!
  • "Meet a new friend necklaces with a sun catcher” and it was so cute to see the kids be brave and find someone new to give a gift to!!
  • Mask making was fun! The kids made some really creative masks!
The gym is also a great outlet for the children after school as they enjoy playing Foxes and Hunters, Pac Man, Pin Bombardment, Pizza Maker, Line Soccer, and Cracker Dodge . . . be sure to ask them about it!

The MAP room is always bustling with activity. Building with blocks and our giant tinker toys, games of battleship, and lots of attention for our guinea pigs Butterscotch and Marshmallow! The recycle art tables are always busy!

MAP welcomes the donation of paper that is blank on one side, paper tubes, and small boxes for creating. We’re looking forward to many more fun afternoons spent with your children.

Session 1 Clubs Have Begun!
We’ve started our first round of afternoon clubs! Clubs run each afternoon from 4 to 4:45/5, for about 6 weeks. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Here is what we’re up to so far:

Mondays
Sharpie Art Club with Jeanne  -  Sharpie Club is off to a fun and creative start! Our first meeting was great and the children were eager to dig in and use those permanent markers they love so much. They created stained glass art using cardboard, yarn, tinfoil and of course, SHARPIES. They worked hard weaving, wrapping and coloring. I hope you enjoyed these wonderful works of art! Looking forward to our next session and seeing what the children create!
Yoga & Mindfulness Club with Joanne  -
Yoga Club got off to a great start! We unrolled our mats and worked on our deep breathing and yoga poses. We talked a bit about our senses and explored with "sensory" toys. The Mapsters enjoyed things like Silly putty, playdough, kaleidoscopes and magnetic sculptures and rollers. We ended our session putting our ears to the test as we played Hide and Seek with a music box. We look forward to more relaxation and fun in the weeks to come!

Tuesdays
Halloween Prep Club with Jodi -  Halloween Prep club has gotten off to a spooky start as we drew some awesome pictures to decorate and scare our families! We’ll be having fun in the next few weeks with other scary (yet fun) crafts and spooky snacks!
Intergalactic Club with Mike -
Intergalactic Club blasted off with a shuttle launch and moon voyage! I am excited to announce that the crew voted on a club based more on learning and doing than making projects. With that said, we are looking forward to astronaut training, a mission to Mars, and more!

Wednesdays
Fall Sports Club with Scott-   This first week at Fall Sports Club was amazing! We were able to enjoy the amazing weather to enjoy my fall time favorite sport called football. We were able to able to learn all the rules we use at MAP and some real rules of the actual games you watch weekly at home.
Board Games Club with Trish –  We have so many games at MAP but maybe you don’t know how to play one of them! We are going to learn a few new games and play some we already know! I can’t wait to hear which games you really want to play!! See you Wednesday!

Thursdays
Kindness Rocks! Club with Megan-   In Kindness Rocks club this week we will talk about what kindness means to the children and how we can put it into our everyday lives. As a  group we will brainstorm some ideas about how we would like to spread kindness throughout MAP, and our local community. We will learn that every act of kindness whether it’s big or small, can create a big chain reaction and make our club poster.
Wavy Wavy Big Blue Club with Terri  -   Wavy Wavy Big Blue starts this week, we might sing a little “baby shark do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do!” ..and we will choose a marine animal to adopt while we sign our pledge to care for the Wavy Wavy Big Blue Ocean!

Fridays
Glow in the Dark Club with Kim- We have been having the best time! We have drawn with yellow highlighters under black lights. Who knew that highlighters glowed?! We have more fun to come like glowing volcanoes and paint!!
The Very Hungry MAP Children & Afternoon Snacks:
We have found that even after having afternoon snack, the children are coming to us later in the day and letting us know that they are HUNGRY.  So we have been allowing them to go into their backpacks & lunchboxes for leftovers. If this sounds like your child, you are welcome to pack them a healthy little something extra to have as a late afternoon snack at MAP. Thank you!

SPARE CLOTHES
Please remember to send in a spare set of clothes for your child to keep in his or her backpack. It will help them to feel more comfortable if they have a spill/accident and can put on their own clothes. MAP has a small supply on hand for “just in case” as well. Thank you!
