Minister's Moment

This Sunday is Father’s Day and the lesson topic is “Respect”. Respect has many faces and many levels of expression. However, the form of respect we are interested in cultivating is that which is reflected in the story of Jesus’s encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. It is important to know that in biblical times the Samaritans were looked down on by the Jewish people even though they practiced the same religion. It is despite this very fact that his willingness to speak with her at all is so significant. Moreover, he didn’t just speak with her, he engaged her in conversation. She said, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.” He replied, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” To this she said, “I know that the Messiah is coming; when he comes, he will show us all things.” And he said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”

There is a modern interpretation of this conversation and the idea of respect in this YouTube video called the Woman at the Well .

Not only did Jesus respect this woman by “seeing her”, he also revealed himself for the first time to her. Jesus must have intuitively known that this woman would resonate with the idea that God must be worshiped in spirit and in truth. In other words, she understood that we experience the blessings of respect when we give the blessings of respect. Another way to say it is “To be seen is to be loved, and to be loved is to be seen.”
