Saturday  
October 6, 2018
9 a.m. - Noon

Join ranks to help clean up the Falls Lake shoreline around Blue Jay Point. Bring work gloves and a water bottle. Sunscreen, a hat, and your favorite brand of insect repellent is recommended. Closed-toe shoes like old sneakers are required. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals, families, and youth groups to provide a great community service. (ages 8 and up please). Volunteers under age 16 must be with a guardian or an adult group sponsor.

Teen Craft Prep Days


Help prepare crafts and materials for for out upcoming family festivals and educational programs. For ages 13 and up. Pre-registration is required. Some outside work may be available--bring a jacket!  All volunteers must bring a completed and signed Volunteer Service Agreement and Release Form in addition to your school community service credit documentation form.



What is it you love most about coming to Blue Jay Point? Whether it's a quiet hike through the woods, a stay in our overnight lodge, participating in one of our programming opportunities, or something else all together we'd love to hear it! Responses may be submitted through October either in person at one of the comment boxes outside the Center or near the playground rest room building, or at the following link

Nature Peekers:
Fall Leaves Fall
Tuesday, October 9   10:30 - 11 a.m.
(for kids ages 18 mos. to 3 years and their grown-up)

Gather together  to listen to Fall Leaves Fall by Zoe Hall and then practice our observation skills as we take a short walk on the trail and look for critters at just
our level.

Nature Colors and Shapes
Wednesday, October 17   1 - 2 p.m.
(for kids ages 3-5 and their grown-up)
 
Mother Nature is dressed in an amazing array of colors and shapes.  Let's go for a hike and see how many we can find!

Batty Batty Batty 1-2-3!
Saturday, October 27   2 - 3 p.m.
(all ages are welcome, but content and activities are 
most appropriate for ages 5 and up)

Learn all about our local bats and the exciting things they
do for us.  Wrap up the session by making a Night Creature Luminary to use in your fall celebrations!

Pond Exploration
Saturday, October 20   10 - Noon


Come investigate Blue Jay's always popular man-made mini-pond through a hands-on adults-only pond exploration! Learn more about our local aquatic ecosystems and the native animals and plants that exist in it. Maybe even get inspired with a few simple ideas about how to create a wildlife friendly aquatic habitat in your own space. Come dressed to get a bit wet and mucky. This workshop can count towards Criteria II or III credit for participants in the NC EE Certification program. Scout leaders take note--take this workshop and you could be "da bomb" with your troop!

Serious Skills for Adults:
Poking Into Plastics
Saturday, November 10   10 - Noon
 

Reduce, Reuse, Reimagine, Recycle-We are going to "reimagine" some #6 takeaway container plastic into fun charms, pendants and ornaments using easy-to-find supplies.  As we work we'll discuss some of the ins and outs of plastic recycling--America Recycles Day is just around the corner!  This workshop can count towards Criteria III credit for participants in the 
NC EE Certification program.

Adult Workshop:
Flying WILD
Tuesday, November 13   9 a.m. - 4 p.m.



Flying WILD professional development workshops are designed with urban/suburban educators in mind. Each training session provides formal and nonformal teachers of K-12 students with a comprehensive overview of Flying WILD: An Educator's Guide to Celebrating Birds, as well as practical hands-on training in its implementation. Workshop facilitators also share information about migratory birds and their conservation needs and help participants become networked into the bird conservation community in their community. Each participating educator receives a complimentary copy of Flying WILD: An Educator's Guide to Celebrating Birds and a certificate indicating 6-hours of professional development training upon completion of the workshop. This workshop is approved for Criteria I credit in the NC EE Certification program. Bring a bag lunch and drink.

Adult Workshop:
Growing Up WILD
Wednesday, December 5   9 a.m. - 4 p.m.



Growing Up WILD is geared towards educators of children between the ages of 3-7 years old and is correlated to the National Association for the Education of Young People Standards and the Head Start Domains. Facilitated by Casey Williams, this 6-hour workshop counts as a Criteria I workshop in the NC Environmental Education Certification Program.  CEU credit will be available upon the completion of a homework assignment.  Meet at the Blue Jay Center for Environmental Education and bring a bag lunch.
