WVPCA Hosted 2018 UDS Training in Charleston
Last week, the WVPCA, in conjunction with HRSA/BPHC  hosted the 2018 UDS Training, presented by Art Stickgold.  This event was held on November 8 in Charleston.
The UDS training is a full-day program reviewing the preparation of the 2018 UDS Report, including discussion of the reports tables and all changed that have been made.

Health Center Program grantees, look-alikes, and certain health centers funded under the HRSA's Bureau of Health Workforce (BHW) submit UDS Report by February 15th. These clinics will then work with a UDS reviewer to correct any potential data errors, so that the UDS reports may be finalized by March 31st. Once finalized, further corrections or amendments are not permitted.

Presenter Art Stickgold has extensive knowledge and experience in health center data and analytics. T his year's training was provided by two modalities:  face-to-face and virtually via WebEx, with approximately  90  participants.

For any questions you may have regarding the current UDS reporting changes, please contact the WVPCA offices at 304-346-0032.

School-Based Health Centers' Impact on Education
Recently, State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Steven Paine, reported in the Charleston Gazette-Mail a summary of the results of the Balanced Scorecard for schools in West Virginia.  He reports that "Some of the results were expected, and some others were surprising".  He goes on to say, "One finding of the Balanced Scorecard that caught many by surprise was a serious problem with school attendance".

While there was no discussion as to the possible causes for missing school, it is known that health reasons account for a percentage of the total which include, acute and chronic care such as influenza, strep infections, type I diabetes and asthma.

As all the entities work together to maximize the potential of our children, it is important for school-based health centers to be able to share the value of having SBHCs.  The research is clear that SBHCs have a direct impact on educational outcomes such as attendance and increases seat time.  Learn more about the value of SBHCs here.
