International Book Club: The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu
5-6pm | Byram Shubert Library

The Tale of the Genji , written in the 11th century by Murasaki Shikibu, a court lady, is Japan's oldest novel and one of the first novels in world literature.
The novel describes life in the Japanese imperial court, its etiquette and intrigues, and, above all, the central character of Prince Genji who is the perfect gentleman in looks and deed. Genji's relations, love affairs, and transition from youth to middle age are all captured by Murasaki's brilliant writing  which combines romanticism and realism in equal measure to capture a timeless treatment of human relations and the general impermanence of all things.

French Cinémathèque: Non-Fiction by Olivier Assayas
7:30pm | Avon Theatre Stamford CT
Non-Fiction (Doubles vies) by Olivier Assayas - 2018

Juliette Binoche and Guillaume Canet reunite with acclaimed director Olivier Assayas (Personal Shopper, Carlos) for this wry, slyly seductive tale of sex, lies, and literature. Set amidst the bohemian intelligentsia of the Parisian publishing world, Non-Fiction traces the romantic and emotional fallout that results when a controversial writer (Vincent Macaigne) begins blurring the line between fact and fiction, using his real-life love affairs-including a passionate fling with an actress (Binoche) who happens to be married to his editor (Canet)-as fodder for his explosive new novel. Balancing dry wit with keen observations on the tensions between art, commerce, and technology, Non-Fiction is a buoyant, breezy delight from a master director at his most effortlessly brilliant.

7:00pm | Byram Shubert Library
The son of Saul (Le fils de Saul)- 2015

The year is 1944 at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Saul Auslander ( Géza Röhrig ), a member of the camp's Sonderkommando-prisoners forced to help the Nazis exterminate Jews, thereby delaying their own deaths for a few months-walks toward the camera from far off in the woods before finally coming into focus in the center of the frame. From there, Hungarian director and co-writer  László Nemes  follows Saul as he goes about his daily work herding new arrivals toward the undressing room and into the gas chamber. They'd been promised hot meals and well-paying jobs, something Saul has heard countless times before.
