This is a special edition of our newsletter for the Area 10 elections. Ballots have been mailed to each official member of Handbell Musicians of America in Area 10. Many of you receiving this are ringers and part of a church/organization that is a member. You will not receive a ballot, but are encouraged to talk with your director about the elections and make a recommendation for their vote. Ballots must be postmarked by August 31, 2012. These bios will also be on our Area 10 website, http://area10.handbellmusicians.org

Candidates for Chair Elect

Diane Barnes Diane Barnes began ringing in 1980 as a founding member of her Church Bell Choir.  In 1987 she moved with her husband to Germany and rang with the Frankfurt Central Chapel Bell Choir taking over as director in 1989.  She has founded children's, youth and adult Handbell choirs in chapels and churches in Germany and the States over her 25 years as a director. She received her musical training at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg VA.  Diane is currently directing The Grace Notes at Ascension Lutheran Church and co-director of the Rogue Ringers in Medford Oregon.  She is Oregon State Chair of Area 10 Handbell Musicians of America and the Director of the annual Siskiyou Summit Handbell Conference in Ashland, Oregon.

Janna Pyle began ringing in 1988 as a member of Festival Bells at College Church of the Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho. In 2002, on the retirement of the previous director she was tapped to begin directing the choir. She has directed that group for 10 years now. She has rung small ensemble (duet, quartet, sextet) and recently began learning to solo ring. She also rings in Treasure Valley Bronze, a community handbell group directed by Phyllis Tincher and is a member of the Board of Directors for Ring Praise Music Ministry. She is married to husband Paul and has a 3 year old son, Asa.

Candidates for Secretary

Scott Barker  Scott Barker has been involved with handbells for more than 35 years.  He is just completing 6 years on the Area 10 board as chair elect, chair and past chair.  He is director of music at St Peters United Methodist Church in Bellevue where he directs both handbells and vocal choirs.  He has also returned to playing in Bells of the Sound after a 2 year retirement.  In his regular life, Scott is the General Manager of 3R Technology, a company that does recycling of computers and other electronics.  Scott lives in West Seattle.

Cyndy Patterson Cyndy Patterson has been involved in bell ringing since the late 70's when introduced to the art through a choir director in Michigan. After ringing off and on for the next 10 years, she's hardly taken a break since. She has been ringing and directing in southern Oregon since 1989 and has served as Area 10 Treasurer in the past. Working with the board of Area 10 was a wonderful experience and it is because of this that she is seeking a term as Secretary. Promoting the art of handbell ringing is definitely a passion.

Current handbell commitments include directing The Shepherd's Bell, which is a combined choir from Presbyterian churches in Central Point and Medford, OR, co-directing the Rogue Ringers, a community choir based in Medford, and ringing with Tintinnabulation, a small ensemble now completing its 20 year, of which she is a founding member. Somehow she also finds time to solo ring and has recently been exploring more possibilities with bell tree solos as well as using bell trees in processionals and enhancements to choir or ensemble music. Cyndy teaches Computer Science at Rogue Community College in Medford to pay for her bell obsession.

Happy Ringing,
Phyllis Tincher
