On Tuesday, the full House Appropriations Committee met to markup the FY2020 Agriculture Appropriations bill.

Last week, the House Education and Labor Committee’s Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Human Services held a hearing to examine the policies and priorities of USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service, the agency responsible for implementation of federal Child Nutrition Programs.

In May, SNA submitted comments on a proposed Summer Food Service Program Integrity Study. Last week, FNS provided a response to SNA’s comments.

U.S. Representative Joe Courtney (D-CT) introduced H.R. 3125, the School Milk Nutrition Act of 2019. The legislation reaffirms recent regulation from the USDA by providing schools with the option to serve low-fat, flavored milk with the intent of increasing milk consumption in schools.

U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-SD) introduced H.R. 3090, the Farm and Ranch to School Act, which would amend the Farm to School Program to include funding to make local livestock and meat procurement for school lunch programs a priority.
In late May, the Vermont House and Senate both approved a bill, S.113, which would prohibit food service establishments from providing plastic carryout bags, expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) and single-use plastic straws.
