Elections this Sunday

Dear friends & family,

A slow vaccination drive and surging Covid-19 infections continues to complicate life in Peru. Many are just working to survive.

The pandemic continues to rage. Alejandro a robust father of four and faithful in the men’s Bible studies, succumbed a couple days ago to Covid-19. A couple weeks before that, another father of three, Jose, died. Pray for their families.

Our Peruvian brothers and sisters have settled into courageous perseverance, accepting what one cannot change and hanging on tight to the loving hand of God.

Despite the many who have had Covid-19, Peru is a long way from reaching any type of herd immunity that would make gathering to vote safer. PRAY FOR THE ELECTIONS THIS SUNDAY! The 2021 Peruvian general election is scheduled to be held on 11 April 11, 2021. The presidential election will determine the President, the 2 Vice Presidents and the congressional elections will determine the composition of the ENTIRE Congress of Peru. All 130 seats of the unicameral Congress will be contested!!

During 2016-2021, Congress forced the resignations of two presidents—Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who was originally elected in 2016, and his successor, Martín Vizcarra. In 2019, Vizcarra dissolved Congress. The current president, Francisco Sagasti, has served on an interim basis since November 2020.

On top of the political unrest, the Peruvian economy contracted 12.9% in 2020—among the worst in Latin America—and the country reported the second-highest COVID-19 death rate per capita in the world at the end of the year.

PLEASE PRAY GOD’S GRACE WILL SUPERINTEND THE ELECTIONS, so vaccinations can be brokered and rapidly administered to the suffering multitudes.
