WKU concrete canoe team fifth in nation
WKU civil engineering students finished fifth overall in the 2019 National Concrete Canoe Competition last weekend in Melbourne, Florida.

The team also finished fifth in technical paper, fifth in final product, ninth in oral presentation, sixth in women’s slalom, seventh in men’s slalom, eighth in women’s sprint, eighth in co-ed sprint and ninth in men’s sprint.

WKU’s StalacTOP (207 pounds and 20 feet long) was one of 24 entries from around the world in the American Society of Civil Engineers competition, hosted by the Florida Institute of Technology June 6-8.

The top five finishers in overall results were University of Florida; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; Université Laval; Tongji University; and WKU. ( Additional results are available online .)

WKU’s ASCE student chapter earned most improved chapter for all ASCE student chapters, was a finalist for the Ridgway Award (one of the top five ASCE student branches) and staff engineer Tyler Baker was named ASCE practitioner of the year.

WKU student second in Hearst multimedia championship
WKU student Skyler Ballard finished second in the Hearst Journalism Awards Program ’s National Multimedia Championship and was honored for Best Multimedia Story of the Year.
Bingocize® receives SNAP-Ed approval, adds new partner
Bingocize®, a health promotion program that combines exercise, health education and bingo, was recently reviewed by three experts who determined the program should be included in the SNAP Education (SNAP-Ed) Toolkit as an evidence-based intervention. Bingocize® also is excited to announce its new partnership with Fresh Baby to supply the nutrition education products that will be used as prizes for participants.
Kentucky Mesonet at WKU moves station to county park
The Kentucky Mesonet at WKU has relocated one of its Warren County stations to Ephram White Park .
Gatton Academy students engaged in summer projects
Students from The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky are beginning summer learning at WKU, around the Commonwealth, and around the globe.
Anthropology faculty member receives mentor award
Dr. Ashley Stinnett, assistant professor of Anthropology, was selected to receive the 2019 Office of Scholar Development Mentor Award. All WKU students who applied for nationally competitive scholarships during the academic year were invited to nominate their mentors.
WKU professor teaching online conflict management course
Dr. Afzal Rahim, world-renowned professor who specializes in studying conflict management within organizations, is teaching an online Special Topics in Management course during June. The online course allows business professionals from anywhere in the world to sign up for the course through WKU’s MBA program .
WKU prepares to celebrate International Year of Revisited
Following the successful completion of the 2018-19 International Year of (IYO) Cuba, WKU is preparing to celebrate the 2019-20 International Year of Revisited . Since its launch in 2014,the IYO program has offered WKU audiences scores of opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the world around them.

Bike4Alz Team 007 is making its way across the country to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer's research. The WKU students are traveling from San Francisco, California, to Virginia Beach, Virginia, and are scheduled to complete their trip on July 20.

Spotlight: Lainie Stubblefield
Lainie Stubblefield lives in Franklin, Tenn., and works during the day as the Owner of Light of Life Massage Therapy. On the side, though, Stubblefield and her sister run a podcast called Steel Magnolias, an endeavor that helps Stubblefield use her WKU communication degree in a fun, fresh way.
114 campers attending SCATS
The Center for Gifted Studies at WKU is hosting 114 campers for the 37th annual  Summer Camp for Academically Talented Middle School Students  (SCATS) through June 21. More: Camp Blog
Patterns theme at Camp Explore
The theme at last week's Camp Explore was Patterns. One pattern easily spotted was that of returning campers and teachers who enjoyed their experience so much last year that they were back for more.
Basketry Now Exhibition
The Kentucky Museum is partnering with the National Basketry Organization to host an international exhibition, Basketry Now: 10 th Anniversary Exhibition . This exhibit opens July 16. The National Basketry Organization has assembled this show of contemporary and traditional basketry with artists employing a variety of both common and uncommon techniques in a wide array of materials.
Blackboard Upgrade
WKU Blackboard is scheduled for an upgrade/migration to the cloud June 29 through July 1. Blackboard will be unavailable those three days. All Blackboard operations are expected to be fully restored by 8 a.m. July 2. Faculty will be able to create Fall 2019 course sites beginning July 2. 
62nd Annual WKU Faculty & Staff Golf Tournament July 12
Campus Recreation & Wellness (formerly Intramural-Recreational Sports) will host the 62nd Annual WKU Faculty & Staff Golf Tournament on July 12 at Cross Winds Golf Course. The tournament is open to all faculty, staff, retirees and their immediate family members. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the department’s student development fund.
Park Smarter App
WKU Parking and Transportation Services introduces a new option for public parking on campus this summer. Using the Park Smarter App , $3 daily parking can be purchased for the Poland Lot.
