St John the Evangelist Parish
June 12, 2019
Parish Directories are here!

If you got your picture taken, you will find a directory in the vestibule of the church with your name on it.
We have some extra directories.  If you would like a directory, regardless of whether you had your picture taken, you can pick one up in the parish office from 8-12 and 1-4 Monday through Friday or in the vestibule of the church this weekend.  (While supplies last.)
Annual Catholic Appeal
Our Parish goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal this year is $108,252!! We are going to need everyone's support to make our goal. If you have already given, thank you! If you haven't yet, your participation, regardless of the amount, will make a difference - to you, to us, and to those who benefit from your generosity.

At this time we have received pledges of $46,534  from 127 donors   leaving us with $61,718 still to collect. While it is important to note that if we do not raise this amount through the ACA campaign we must make up the difference through our ordinary income, our hope is that this community will show itself ready to help both the local and the larger Church. Our witness, so important, to Catholics throughout this region, relies upon each person's willingness to act as part of this community.

Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross is a 30 minute devotion that
offers witness to Jesus' passion and death.
At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect
prayerfully upon Jesus' suffering, death, and resurrection, and to simply experience the visual images to reflect on Christ's love for us.
(adapted from  www.loyolapress.com)

St John will pray the Stations
Wednesday, June 12th at 7pm in the church.
Contact Jim Russell if you would like to help.
There is another scam out there where someone posing as Father Crispin texts a message asking for assistance.  Please do not respond to these texts.  You can block the phone number in your phone.  It is not Father's phone number.  Thank you.

The St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) ministry at St John's serves the needy of our parish neighborhood by responding to calls for assistance and visiting them in their homes. Earlier this month, one of our neighbors watched her hours working in retail gradually dwindle in preparation of a major store closure. Battling stage 4 lung cancer has left her with few prospects and little ability to find new work. We were able to supply this neighbor with food from our parish pantry, assistance with her rent, and bus tickets so she can focus on taking charge of her life. Last month, due to your generous donations, we were able to assist 18 people with a total of $2,290 in assistance given along with nine bags of food from our pantry.

Please consider contributing to this important ministry for our local community! A gift of $5 or more each week goes a long way to support our neighbors. You can use the St. Vincent de Paul collection envelopes or please consider creating an ongoing electronic donation using the Vanco services link on the St John website . We also collect non-perishable food for our food pantry the 3rd Sunday mass of each month.

Laudato Si in Action
In Laudato Si, Pope Francis refers to a throw-away culture where we consume things once and then throw them away. He also extends the concept of throw-away to people:

The "throwaway culture" has become a pandemic today, and it leaves migrants and displaced people without a voice and at the mercy of those who exploit them, Pope Francis said.

Suzanna and I were fortunate to attend the Catholic Immigration Summit at St Catherine of Siena Parish this past weekend. There we learned about the plight of immigrants and how others in our community are supporting our immigrant brothers and sisters. We learned that most of the current wave of immigrants are from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, all countries with weak governments and abject poverty and violence.

It's hard to know what to do, how to help those who are suffering. Seattle is not on the border and the suffering of our immigrant neighbors is easy to forget. At the summit, we heard from representatives of three Western Washington parishes about what they were doing to respond to the current crisis.   Read more ...

We haven't had odds and ends in a while.  Let's.

"Prayers are tools not for doing or getting but for being and becoming."   - Eugene Peterson

"Every Christian life must be, in its degree, at once active and contemplative."  - Margaret Anna Cusack, Founder of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace

"When Sir Ernest Shackleton embarked on his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, he ran an advertisement in The London Times: "MEN WANTED: for hazardous journey.  Small wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful.  Honour and recognition in event of success."
Over 5,000 applied.
The same ad has been run by the Holy Spirit in our day, and the same response is pouring in.  We just need to recognize it."
--From an article titled "WANTED: The Good Guys" by Eliabeth Mitchell

"It is a lesson we all need - to let alone the things that do not concern us.  He has other ways for others to follow Him; all do not go by the same path.  It is for each of us to learn the path by which He requires us to follow Him, and to follow Him in that path." - St. Katharine Drexel, quoted in Blessed Among Us, March 4, 2019, in Give Us This Day magazine.

"May the Lord answer you in time of trial;
May the name of Jacob's God protect you,
Sending you help from the holy place,
And giving you support from Zion.

May God remember all your offerings,
Receive your sacrifice with favor,
Give you your heart's desire,
And fulfill every one of your plans.

May we ring out our joy at your victory,
And raise banners in the name of our God.
May the Lord grant all your prayers."
- A blessing from the beginning of Psalm 20.
