Nate Turner
is our volunteer of the month for December.
Nate began volunteering with Western Reserve Racing this year with the Tents & Trails weekend helping out at aid stations and being a course marshal as well. Most recently he volunteered at the Dirty Dirty 12k at the Boston Run aid station.
Growing up Nate was diagnosed with scoliosis (a curve in his spine), but never let any of it slow him down. Being active throughout his life from playing sports, hiking, and weight lifting; running was something he never considered to stay active. His running journey began in 2011 when he did the Home Run for the Homeless with some friends, along with other 5k’s and continued to his first trail race, the Dirty Dirty last year. He had a goal of wanting to complete a half marathon which he accomplished this year by running the Grayson Highlands State Park Half in May. After completing his first half he “was hooked” not only from what he had accomplished but what he got to see along the way during the race with all of the different views. Since then he has run 4 more half marathons and a 25k last month in northern Georgia. He plans on finishing out the race year by running the Bigfoot 20 miler at Salt Fork. He has enjoyed the progress that he’s made with his running in such a short amount of time and plans to complete a 50k next year.
When not on the trails he enjoys his work as a physical therapist assistant helping people recover from surgeries or injuries. He also enjoys climbing at Rock Mill climbing gym, and running with the various local running groups throughout the week and the friendships he’s made, along with travelling. He has also volunteered for local clean ups with Keep Akron Beautiful and Summit Metro Parks, and enjoys giving his time to help out others whenever he’s able to.
Thanks Nate for all of your volunteering !!!
