Welcome to the November 2018 issue of the CMD-IT newsletter. This month we are featuring some coming attractions for programs that will open submissions in December - our 2019 Academic Careers Workshop and the CMD-IT University Award.

Tomorrow is #GivingTuesday, the annual day of global giving. We encourage everyone to help support CMD-IT by
making a donation tomorrow. Your donation will allow us to continue providing programs that support our mission
to ensure that underrepresented groups are fully engaged in computing and information technologies, and to promote innovation that enriches, enhances, and enables these communities, such that more equitable and sustainable contributions are possible by all communities.
In 2018, we continued to increase our impact. Our 2018 highlights include:
- Launching the FLIP Alliance. Made up of 11 universities that are the top producers of CS faculty at research institutions, the Alliance is focused on increasing the number of underrepresented minorities and people with disabilities in the professoriate. Your support enables us to continue to dedicate our resources to this important work.
- Tapia 2018 grew over 20% this year. We are seeing the demand for the conference grow and your support enables us to offer more scholarships and opportunities to our attendees.
- We secured an NSF grant which will enable us to offer our Academic Career Workshop for the next three years and complete a longitudinal study.
- The CMD-IT University Award was awarded to the University of North Carolina and enabled us to highlight again this year effective practices for the retention of underrepresented minorities and people with disabilities in computing. Your donations help us support the Faculty Workshops where these best practices are disseminated.

CMD-IT University Award
Applications Open in December
|
The 2019 CMD-IT University Award for Retention of Minorities and Students with Disabilities in Computer Science will open for submissions in December. Applications will be due May 1, 2019.
The University Award recognizes US institutions that have demonstrated a strong commitment to increasing the computer science baccalaureate degree production of minorities and students with disabilities, through effective retention programs. All universities and colleges are encouraged to complete a submission.Each participating university will receive a detailed report that summarizes the data across all participating institutions.To learn more go to our University Award page.

Academic Careers Workshop Applications Open in December
|
The 2019 Academic Careers Workshop will be held in May 2019.
he goal of the workshop is to mentor underrepresented assistant- and associate-level faculty and senior doctoral students about the academic career ladder.The workshop will include panels of diverse senior faculty talking about the tenure and promotion process, launching a research program, effective networking, and a detailed session on proposal writing. In addition, the workshop will include a discussion about alternative career paths. The Academic Careers Workshop is funded by an NSF grant. All assistant and associate level faculty and senior doctoral students are encouraged to apply. Applications will open December 5, 2018 and are due February 28, 2019. Learn more on our

FLIP Alliance University Deadlines

What are the FLIP Alliance Universities?
They are the Universities that produce a majority of the computer science faculty at research universities.
Application deadlines are coming soon. Many of the institutions offer application waivers for students with financial need.

On October 28-30, 2018 Microsoft Research hosted its PhD Summit, a two day workshop at its Redmond Washington lab. This year Microsoft Research extended invitations to FLIP Fellows to attend the workshop. The workshop enabled Microsoft PhD Fellows and the FLIP Fellows to meet with Microsoft researchers and other PhD students.
Presentations by Microsoft researchers included:
- Opening Keynote by Eric Horvitz
- Panel on Building Your Brand
- Panel on The Road Less Traveled: Government, Academia, Industry and Everywhere in Between
- Keynote presentation by Peter Lee
On the second day of the workshop, the FLIP Fellows visited the University of Washington's Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, where presentations included:
- Academic Job Market Preparation
- Highlighting Interdisciplinary Collaborations in Academia and the Seattle Area
The FLIP Fellows were also treated to Lab tours and networking activities at the University of Washington.
