Message from Dr. Devine

Dear pre-law students,

A new law-related course will be offered next semester on "Applied Legal Analytics and Artificial Intelligence."  It is being co-designed, and will be co-taught, by Dr. Matthias Grabmair of the Language Technologies Institute here at CMU, and Professor Kevin Ashley of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.  The course is a joint effort between Pitt Law and LTI and, and the faculty are  soliciting students from both schools, including CMU undergraduates.

Course topics in will include machine learning and natural language applied to legal data, computational models of legal reasoning, and selected legal issues that relate to AI technologies. Students should come from either a (pre-) law background with a strong interest in gaining practical experience with legal analytics, or from a technical discipline with an equally strong interest in tackling the challenges posed by legal analytics tasks and data.
  • Course number: forthcoming
  • CMU units: 12
You can view the course website here.

Dr. Grabmair and Professor Ashley will hold an information session about this course from 5-6 PM on Tuesday, November 13 (location to be announced).  All interested students are invited to attend.

If you have questions about the course, or have an interest but cannot attend the 11/13 meeting, you may contact Dr. Grabmair at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Dr. Devine

4 Ways to Simplify the Law School Application Process
Some say applying to law school is difficult. But once you get through the standardized testing, it's actually pretty straight-forward.
Tips to help get your application going

Enrollment up at some schools, but is that good or bad?
Enrollment is up at some law schools. Hooray!!! Or . . . Oh, no!!!
For the schools witnessing an increase, it's definitely a hooray moment. Some have experienced years of enrollment decline and have had to weather layoffs and worse. However, some worry that an enrollment jump could spell trouble if three years from now the job market is as soft as it is currently. You'll have more grads looking for a limited number of jobs - again.

There's a reason law schools check you out when applying
As a pre-law student, you will find that law schools do extensive screening in hopes of fielding stellar classes full of ambitious, smart and morally upright students. Some will check your Facebook account to see if there are pictures of you doing Jello shots, for instance.
But they are not perfect.

Valparaiso U. Law School and Arizona Summit Law School Latest to Close
Law school applications are on the rebound and most schools are bullish about the future, but that's not a trend all law schools are enjoying. Two more law schools, Valparaiso University Law School and Arizona Summit Law School, are closing. Both recently announced they would forge teach-out plans for current students and then cease operations. That brings the number of ABA-accredited law schools to close to five.

Tuition down 6% since 2011
Given recent trends concerning the health of law schools, one might think that the ability to be shocked at the level of hardship would have long ceased. That's not the case. A recent study put the situation into a whole new light by using cold hard cash as a measurable. And it's quite a lot of cold hard cash. It's estimated that law schools have lost $1.5 billion annually in tuition revenue from 2011-2012 to 2016-2017.

J.D.-advantage careers in growth Industries
More law school students are curious about J.D.-advantage careers - but not exactly sure what they are. These are positions that do not require bar admission, but where a law degree would be considered an asset. Of late, J.D.-advantage jobs have been a solid alternative to more traditional positions. For example, law graduates work as legal recruiters, as personnel in the administration of law firms, in accounting firms, consulting firms and in academic administration in colleges and law schools.

Santa Clara Law has new building
Santa Clara University School of Law has new digs. At a cost of $58 million, the new building places nearly all of the law school's resources into one site. Earlier, the law school was contained in several campus buildings. The construction of the new 96,000 square-foot building was kick-started by a $10 million donation from Howard S.
