The Truth Has a Power of Its Own
by Howard Zinn

Submitted by Erik S.
Conversations with the famous historian Howard Zinn on the significance, and various lessons to be drawn, from his book A People’s History of the United States and from his career as a historian and activist. Of particular note are Zinn’s reflections on his pacifist convictions (himself a veteran of World War II) and his thoughts on the value of critical history.

The Glittering Hour
by Iona Grey

Submitted by Terri S.
Fans of Downton Abbey will find lots to love in this mesmerizing new novel. This richly drawn story of love, loss, and family secrets unfolds in interspersing chapters with the voices of Selina Lennox, one of London’s “Bright Young People,” and that of her ten-year-old daughter, Alice. Grey’s writing is gorgeous, made even more beautiful with narration by Imogen Church in audio format. I loved listening to this absorbing story and I’m sure I would have enjoyed reading it just as much. Pop in your earbuds (or pick up the book) and be carried away. A perfect winter read!

The Likeability Trap: How to Break Free and Succeed As You Are
by Alicia Menendez

Submitted by Molly J.
“Women are perceived as either strong and cold or weak and warm.” This sentence gives you an idea of where the book is headed. Research shows that the more women succeed, the less “likeable” they become. Menendez discusses how striving to be likeable is a trap, especially as a woman. This book is not about how to make yourself more likeable, but rather to consider how you perceive yourself, others, and to rethink your need to be liked. The book will argue that in most cases you’re playing the likeability game with loaded dice, as there is little benefit to trying to control how others perceive you.
