Monday, Sept. 17, 4:30 p.m. - 5:45pm., Posner Center

In February 2018, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court found Pennsylvania's Congressional districting to be an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander, leading to the adoption of new map for the 2018 midterm elections.  In this talk, Professor Wes Pegden (CMU  Associate Professor, Department of Mathematical Sciences) will discuss one kind of evidence which the court used to reach this conclusion.  In particular, he will discuss a theorem that allows us to use randomness to detect gerrymandering of Congressional districtings in a statistically rigorous way, and, more generally, the ways in which mathematics can hope to productively interact with the law.

LSAT/PreLaw

Worried about your LSAT performance?
Prospective law school student Rebecca asks LSAT expert Ross Rinehart about a possible poor performance. I just took the July 2018 LSAT, and according to multiple forums it was a repeat of the Feb 2014 LSAT. I found it to be exceptionally challenging because of the two logic game sections. The Law School Admission Council, the overlords of the LSAT, thought they were sitting pretty with this harsh reality - until recently, when a fierce competitor showed up on the scene and the very entity that more or less forced all pre-law students to take the LSAT for admissions purposes suggested that the entry exam requirement be dropped.
