State Archives Re-opens to the Public with COVID-19 Protocols in Place

The New York State Education Department’s Cultural Education Center (CEC) re-opened to the public on May 17, 2021 with new COVID-19 protocols in place. Home to the State Archives Library and Museum, new (temporary) hours for the building will be Monday through Friday, 10 am – 4 pm. The CEC has taken all precautions for visitor safety in accordance with New York State and CDC COVID-19 practices and restrictions, including:

Masks will be required for visitors over the age of two.
Capacity per institution, floor and/or gallery will be limited to allow for safe social distancing.
The Museum will not be scheduling or allowing tour groups of more than 10 individuals until further notice.

Researchers seeking to access the State Archives and Library’s Manuscripts and Special Collections must schedule an appointment by email or phone.

400 Years Later: the charter that launched the colony of New Netherland

Join New Netherland Research Center Director Charles Gehring, author and researcher Jaap Jacobs, professor of History and International Relations Wim Klooster, and State Archivist Tom Ruller as they recognize the granting of a charter by the States General of the Netherlands to the Dutch West India Company on June 3, 1621 to operate what eventually became the colony of New Netherland.

2017 ESAHA Laureate

On May 18, award-winning author, historian and Harvard Professor Annette Gordon-Reed received the 2021 Empire State Archives & History Award (ESAHA) from the Archives Partnership Trust. Interviewed by friend, nationally prominent Lincoln Scholar and 2017 ESAHA Laureate Harold Holzer, audience members heard Gordon-Reed speak about her research and career as a lifelong history enthusiast. Winner of sixteen book prizes, including the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2009 and the National Book Award in 2008 for The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family, her latest book, On Juneteenth, was just released.
