Hello Glenbard West Community -
Hard to imagine, but here we are at Thanksgiving break. Here at Glenbard West, there has been a great deal of energy around the importance of gratitude for our students and staff. You may have heard that on Wednesday of last week, the Social Studies department hosted a speaker, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Harold "Hal" Fritz. Students who came into the auditorium to hear him were very interested to learn about his heroics; many of them lined up to meet him after the talk, where they expressed their thanks for his courage and service. Also, last week, students, with the help of our West Nation parents, participated in an after-school event that we call "Gratitude Day." Students simply write thank you notes to teachers and staff - the cafeteria was completely filled by students on that day! While these are just two examples, they illustrate why I can tell you with all honesty that the staff at West is thankful for all of our students every day!
Educators, leaders, and parents are faced with countless challenges as we look to explore the best ways to challenge students while also helping them to manage the many stressors they face. You may have noticed that last week Glenbard West hosted Glenbard Parent Series speakers, William Stixrud and Ned Johnson who were presenting on their latest book, The Case for the Self-Driven Child. I invite everyone to look closely at this important and profound work. Their research has suggested that those students with a strong sense of autonomy are the most likely to develop self-motivation that will allow them to achieve their long-term goals. Sadly, they also note that too often our young people are motivated by an excessive and destructive drive to succeed that can be associated with an absence of purpose or control.
A low sense of control can be highly connected with anxiety, depression and sometimes mental health problems.
I have included in this newsletter an interview with these authors about their book, that I would recommend to any parent. Click

Along those lines, I would encourage all of us to take whatever down time we have during the holidays to ask questions and listen to our young adults. As a parent myself, I am all too eager to explain to my own kids how the world works or tell them what they should be doing. However, there is great value in assuming the listening and learning role as parents. Like learners everywhere, our young people need to participate in their own growth. They do that through practice and observation.

Each year Glenbard West recognizes one deserving student for the Daughter of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award.
Ellie Morrison
is the 2018-2019 recipient of the Glenbard West Daughter of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award. The Daughter of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award recognizes one student who excels in dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Ellie displays strength in all these areas through her involvement in activities and clubs at Glenbard West as well as her academic achievements. The local Daughter of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award chapter will honor Ellie during an award ceremony at the Glen Ellyn Village Hall in February.

All-District Festival
Glenbard West High School has nine students selected to participate in the 2018 Illinois Music Educators Association All-District Festival at Elgin High School in Elgin, Illinois. The students were selected based on a rigorous audition procedure of etudes, musical excerpts, scales, triads, and sight-reading. Congratulations to the following students: In band: senior euphonium, Ben Kelleher. In orchestra: junior violist, Marina Akamatsu and senior violist, Timothy Holman. In choir: senior alto, Emma Raczka and senior bass, Jack Vu. The students selected for the Freshman-Sophomore Nominated Choir were, freshman soprano, Veronica Letarte; freshman alto, Allyn Gordon; freshman tenor, Lucas Quintos, and freshman bass, Austin Braun. Congrats ILMEA Students!!

West Sports Update
Once again Glenbard West has enjoyed a great fall season with many team and individual accomplishments. Here are just a few highlights:

Varsity Boys Cross Country finished 6th Place at the IHSA 3A State Finals.
The team was led by All-State runners Rory Cavan and Stephen Moody who finished 5th and 6th Place respectively at the State Finals in Peoria.
|
|
Varsity Girls Tennis won the IHSA Sectional and finished
5th Place at the State Finals in
mid-October.
|
|
Varsity Girls Cross Country finished 13th Place at the State Finals in Peoria. Katelynne Hart won her 3rd consecutive State Championship at the State meet and Katie Hohe finished 15th Place to earn All-State recognition.

Varsity Field Hockey finished 3rd Place at the IHSFHA State
Tournament
in late October. This is the 4th consecutive year
that
the team has
finished in the top 4 of the State.

Varsity Football won the West Suburban Silver Conference
Championship for the 10th time in the last 11 years.

Boys Basketball will host the District 87 Tournament for all levels November 19-21.
Girls Basketball will have their first home game on Tuesday, November 27 vs. Lyons Township at 7:30 p.m.
Wrestling will host "King of the Duals" Saturday, November 24th starting at 9:00 a.m.
Girls Gymnastics will host the inaugural Hilltopper Invite on Saturday, December 1 at 11:00 a.m.
Cheer and Dance have moved to their competition season and have upcoming meets in December.
Boys Swimming begins practices November 19 with their first meet in early December.

This year we have decided to make an exciting and important change to our graduation gowns beginning with our Class of 2019.
All Glenbard West seniors will wear green gowns with a white Glenbard West logo embroidered on the shoulder with white cuffs on the sleeves (see photo).
The quality of the gown is much improved from the previous gowns used.
Also, we believe that using the same multi-colored gown will help to unite the seniors, helping them to focus on our similarities rather than our differences.
All other Glenbard schools moved to make the same choice with their graduation gowns as well.
We look forward to seeing everyone at graduation on Thursday, May 23, 2019.

On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, Glenbard West was honored to have Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Mr. Harold "Hal" Fritz speak to our students during our Veteran's Day celebration. Ali Siddiqi introduced Mr. Fritz to our students and at the conclusion, students lined up to thank Mr. Fritz for his service.

FINE ARTS NEWS
|
Recently twenty student artworks from AP Studio Art were submitted to the annual Chicagoland 4" x 5" competition called, "The largest 'small' art exhibit in the nation."
Over 1,200 artworks were submitted from local high schools. Only 138 awards were given (meaning over 1,000 works did not get an award). Glenbard West earned 2 awards!!!
Awards were earned by Logan Solarz in "Drawing" and Jenna Grogan in "Computer Generated Art".

Winter Music Festival Concerts
The Music Department will present the Winter Music Festival on Wednesday, November 28. Due to increased enrollment, the concert has been expanded into two concerts on that evening, an Early Concert (6pm start) featuring the Treble Choir, Concert / Baritone Choir, IBand, and Symphonic Band; and a Late Concert (8pm start) featuring Concert Band, Concert Orchestra, Advanced Treble Choir, and Chamber Choir. The Winter Music Festival is the only music department school concert in which reserved seat tickets are sold due to the large audience in attendance. Tickets for the Winter Music Festival can be purchased at the door. Tickets are $5 for adults. Admission for students, senior citizens, and Booster Pass Holders will be $2. We hope to have another packed house so please join us for the concerts on November 28.

Share your thoughts about our Profile of a Graduate
We are creating a Profile of a Graduate, which is a collection of capabilities or qualities that characterize our graduates. Our Profile of a Graduate will guide our work to prepare students for a bright future in a changing world. It will help answer:
- What should our graduates be able to do?
- What should they know?
- How will they view themselves?
- What are they ready to do?
We're
working with EdLeader21 to identify the skills, knowledge and experiences our students must gain in high school so they are prepared for college, careers and life. EdLeader21 is a national organization of education leaders who are focused on integrating critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity into education.
As part of our Profile of a Graduate process, we gathered input from across our community through
Thoughtexchange, an online discussion tool. People answered two open-ended questions and saw and rated other people's comments through a star rating system. The star ratings allowed ideas to rise to the top as our community members prioritized what's important to them. Many thanks to everyone who participated in our Thoughtexchange.
Next semester, a
60-member committee will
participate in a series of work sessions as a
part of the Profile of a Graduate process. This committee represents a cross-section of our community and includes students, staff, administrators, parents, business people, faith leaders, alumni and higher education representatives. Committee members will review feedback from our Thoughtexchange as they develop our Profile of a Graduate. We plan to have a finished Profile of a Graduate this summer.
I
am excited about this work and look forward to incorporating the community's feedback into our Profile of a Graduate.

FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELING DEPARTMENT |
Seniors
- We know you are feeling some relief as the bulk of the college application deadlines passed on November 1st! There are still applications being submitted for December and January deadlines, but we've currently had 2,302 applications submitted by 409 students! Make sure to remind your seniors to send a thank you note to all the teachers that took the extra time to write their letters of recommendation. We are excited to report we had 170 college reps visit Glenbard West in the Fall to talk to 840 student attendees! Just another reminder, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened up in October. If you haven't done so already, make sure you follow the link on your senior's Naviance account to get the FAFSA completed, not only for consideration of financial aid, but also scholarships from colleges. Speaking of scholarships, Local Scholarship applications will become available in February on Naviance. More to follow in subsequent newsletters.
Juniors - Free SAT test prep is being offered by our District. You'll be able to sign up in the near future so be on the lookout for information on our website. A reminder of the free test prep through Khan Academy is ,available to you anytime by logging into your College Board account. Be sure to follow up on our September presentations and the recent College Night by continuing your college research and developing your activity resume in Naviance. Although the bulk of our college rep visits have taken place, there will be more in the Spring! Make sure you are checking in Naviance to sign up for these visits.
Sophomores - Counselors will be visiting your English classrooms the first week of December to talk about enrolling in your classes next year and reviewing your options. It is never to early to start talking to your teachers about recommendations for what you should be taking junior year. In Spring, we'll be coming to English classes to guide you through a personality test on Naviance and begin exploring some potential careers, college majors, and developing an activity resume.
Freshmen - If your counselor hasn't met with you already, we will in the upcoming weeks. We're talking about your future plans, showing you how to choose your classes in PowerSchool and talking about your goals.
2019-20 Course Enrollment
Beginning December 3rd
School Counseling will begin the course enrollment process for next school year. Students will once again enter their course requests online in the student portal of PowerSchool.
During the week of December 3rd, school counselors will visit Sophomore English and Junior U.S. History classes to discuss the online enrollment process and hand out course enrollment forms.
Freshmen are meeting in small groups with their counselor to make general selections in PowerSchool that you may edit from home.
Students will be able to enter their course selections beginning December 3rd and have until January 8th.
Students who have an IEP or who receive academic support within the ELL program will have access to view their course selections which will be chosen through an individualized team process. After the deadline, students will meet individually with their school counselors during the weeks of January 14th through February 1st. These dates can be found on the
Glenbard West School Counseling public calendar.

It is essential that your student give careful consideration to his/her course choices. Any changes after February 1 must be discussed with the student's school counselor prior to April 30. Students may not change their mind after April 30. Parents, we value your input in this process because you best understand your own student's interests and goals. You also see how the overall academic rigor of his or her schedule affects daily functioning.

Taking the Advanced Placement exams is an important part of all AP courses. Glenbard West High School desires that all students take AP exams for the AP classes they are enrolled in. Scoring well on an AP exam can often earn students college credit for their high school class, saving a significant amount of tuition. Starting a few years ago, all public Illinois universities and community colleges award credit to any student who receives a 3 or higher on a 5-point scale.
For the 2019 AP exams, students at Glenbard West High School will be registering online. This registration will take a few minutes and can be completed from any computer with internet access.
This year each AP exam costs $94.00 with exception to AP Seminar and AP Research which costs $142.00 per exam. Glenbard West High School desires that every student be able to take their AP exams. Students requiring financial assistance should contact Dr Rebecca Sulaver,

Online Exam registration will begin on Friday, Feb 1, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. and end on Thursday, Feb 28, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. In order to register, students should click on the link provide on the school website or visit
www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/142075
to register. To complete the registration, students must answer all of the required questions. Registration is not complete until students have printed the pdf of the confirmation page that is provided at the end. We know that parents may desire to register their students for exams. We strongly recommend that parents and students are both present while registering to ensure that the correct exams are ordered.
Glenbard West High School is excited to offer families the convenience of paying exam fees online at the time of registration. Please be sure to have a credit card or debit card available before beginning the registration process. Here are the important dates for the registration process:

8th Grade Parent Night

On Tuesday, January 15, 2019, Glenbard West will hold an 8th grade Parent Night. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. Parents and students will have the opportunity to learn about the curriculum, summer school enrichment opportunities, and the registration and enrollment process. Please plan on attending this very important and informational evening. We are excited to meet and welcome the Class of 2023!

PROJECT LEAD THE WAY
|
|
Project Lead The Way (PLTW) provides transformative learning experiences for students and teachers across the United States. The program includes engaging, hands-on classroom activities which empower students to develop in-demand knowledge and skills. Glenbard 87 will be offering courses in the PLTW Engineering pathway. This pathway empowers students to step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset, and make the leap from dreamers to doers.
Beginning in 2019-20, students can take Introduction to Engineering Design

This quarter as a school, we are campaigning and encouraging students to CHOOSE KIND as part of the West Way theme. The concept of being kind to others expands upon all of the Social and Emotional Learning Competencies. Nationally, more than 1 out of 5 students (20.8%) report being bullied (
National Center for Educational Statistics, 2016
). Due to these alarming statistics, as a school, we want to encourage students to always be kind to themselves and others.
Kindness is an important interpersonal skill that all students can improve upon. Being kind often required courage and strength.
Did you know kindness increases energy, happiness, and pleasure?
Did you know kindness also decreases pain, anxiety, stress, and depression?
Did you know that kindness is teachable and contagious? Model for your student ways to be friendly, generous, warm, and caring towards others and themselves.
Random act of kindness is a selfless act performed by kind people to either help or cheer up a random stranger or someone you know, for no reason other than to make people happier. We encourage you to visit the below site to gather random act of kindness ideas to do as a family or individually.

FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE |
|
On November 2nd, Glenbard West Student Council sponsored the Freshman Leadership Conference. This event looks to develop and refine the leadership skills of our freshman class. Freshmen are nominated by staff who recognize their potential for greatness. Deb and Dana Hult of Core Training are nationally renowned working with hundreds of schools across the United States teaching the power of positive peer relations within school. Both Deb and Dana designed extremely interactive breakout sessions customized to fit the culture of Glenbard West and focused on empowering students to make an impact on the school and community.
Most students seldom receive formal training in basic leadership skills and our belief is this leadership training will help them become more meaningful and effective. Other breakout sessions are hosted by teacher/sponsor Ms. Monahan and teacher/coach Mr. Zander. The conference is a unique experience for students to interact and learn from experts as well as leaders within Glenbard West.

MATTER OF PRIDE
|
|
Matter of Pride is a recognition award given to students who demonstrate through their
actions, quality character that promotes Glenbard West. Nominations come from
staff
members as well as individuals within our communities. Ten nominees are
selected monthly and presented with certificates and t-shirts.

Rotary Mentor Day
On Thursday, November 1st, 45 students from Glenbard West and Glenbard South participated in the annual Glen Ellyn Rotary Mentor Day. These high school juniors spent the morning shadowing a professional in a career field they are interested in pursuing to learn about what the career entails. Following, the students, mentors and members of the Glen Ellyn Rotary met for lunch, sponsored by the Rotary at Glen Oak Country Club. TECHNOLOGY CENTER OF DUPAGE

TCD)
The last day of student attendance for 1st Semester at TCD will be Tuesday, December 18, 2018. Students will report to Study Hall unless parent calls to excuse them.
EXAM MAKE-UP
Students who have an excused absence from an exam may make arrangements with their teacher to make up the exam during the Exam Make-up Session. Students may also arrange with teachers to make up exams during Resource Periods.
RESCHEDULED EXAMS
Students who have three exams on Day 1 or Day 2, may elect to change or move one of their exams to the Rescheduled/Makeup time slot on Day 3. All exam reschedules must be completed and approved one week prior to the exam (by Wednesday, December 12th). Students can pick up the reschedule form in the Dean's Office.
QUIET STUDY AREAS
Supervised quiet study areas will be available for students who wish to study during their free period. There are to be no students in the halls without a pass during the exam periods. All students are to remain in their classes for the entire period.
CAFETERIA SERVICE
The Bridge in the cafeteria will be open for breakfast in the morning and for snacks during passing periods all three days of Final Exams.
STUDY HALL
Students may be excused from study hall, if written notice from a parent or guardian has been turned in to the attendance office, prior to the day of the final exam. All students are encouraged to attend their study hall in order to prepare for any upcoming exams.
*There will be regular morning bus service on all exam days.
