Aphids
If you see black sooty mold appearing on your plants like Crape Myrtles, you may have a heavy aphid infestation. Aphids use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant juices. They secrete a sugary liquid called honeydew which black sooty mold grows on. If you have a heavy infestation, there are control options including horticultural oil, insecticidal soap, and beneficial insects like lady bugs (we offer these options in-store. For small infestation, use a jet stream of water to knock them off your plants. Make sure to squish those bugs.
