I live just north of Boston and about five years ago someone had the brilliant idea to start a closed Facebook group called
Everything Free in Medford .
Realizing that many things ended up in the landfill because selling items took time, effort,
and rarely a lot of cash.

What would happen if
we just gave them away?
The return on this simple idea has brought our community together to benefit our neighbors in ways that no one expected and surrounding communities have created sister sites based on our model.

The rules are simple and you can offer or request items

Everything must be free and you can not resell items you receive. The group has grown to around 4,000 where everything from half of a cabbage to a car (yes a working car) have been exchanged. On the most basic level, the group has created the following personal, environmental,
and economic benefits.
What just 7% of a community can accomplish
  • Prevented items from going to landfills & gave them a second life with a new person
  • Kept people from having to buy things that they need reducing their carbon footprint
  • Allowed people to borrow items like tools or formal wear instead of purchasing something they will use infrequently or once
  • Became a source of public information such as a lost pet or community events
  • Provided furniture and clothing for families in need or had a house fire
  • Helped community nonprofits that needed volunteers or materials for their projects
  • Reduced food waste by redistributing pantry clean outs and leftovers
  • Clothes round robins spread sustainable joy to others by not buying new.
  • Mountains of Amazon boxes repurposed as moving boxes
  • Dryer lint has been collected as part of a scientific experiment about microplastics
  • Toilet paper rolls and broken plates have become school and public art projects

But most importantly...
being urban can be isolating like many of your attendee's jobs.

We got to know each other online and found things in common
which led to deeper and more meaningful real-life connections.

People formed friendships and even dated because they became familiar online and not because of what they had to give or needed. When my bike tires need air, I can now email my neighbor for her pump. When a neighbor broke her ankle and needed someone to walk her kids to school when her husband was out of town, I was happy to help her out. I have explored parts of my city I have had no other reason to visit.

We made our own interwoven networks from our go-to people
when we felt personal connections from tangential interactions
Your event should bring people together
and strive to be this kind of positive force in the lives of your members and leave a meaningful impact on the conference's host city.

Building a supportive and active online community breeds familiarity that leads to real-life interactions at your conference.

Even lurking online gives a person a sense who they will meet at your event and makes them more likely to attend. People will gravitate towards those who have been active and many will have already established friendships. These relationships deepen onsite and create event loyalty through an ongoing emotional connection.
This bond encourages people to become ambassadors for your event.

Having an actively recruiting membership is what drives attendance and membership growth.
This growth creates long-term sponsor relationships.

Sponsors want to be able to annually connect with existing clients,
meet new customers, and have the opportunity to personally engage
with all of your attendees.

A Conference Care Package can be changed every year and customized according to your evolving relationship with your sponsor. A raffle ticket provides the opportunity to increase their return on engagement by driving booth traffic.
