NEWS FROM BROOKSIDE SCHOOL
Smile! Family Math Night, a MTEA FAST sponsored event was held at Brookside School the evening of Wednesday, April 17. A huge turnout of third, fourth and fifth graders and their families started the evening making fraction expression selfies and continued by playing games with their families. Students were able to go to different math stations and play games and do activities based on the curriculum. As they completed activities, they marked it off on their BINGO boards. Winners were chosen for cool prizes once their boards were finished. One student loved the Beat the Teacher station where they competed against Mr. Silverman to see who could get more multiplication facts done in a minute, "I almost beat him in math facts. I hope they do this next year so I can continue to practice and get more than him next time!" The teachers and staff volunteered their time and felt the event was a great way to reinforce skills, show students math can be fun and get a chance to spend time with students, families and the community. Jen Corvinus, a 4th grade teacher stated, "A special thanks to the MTEA for giving us this super fun opportunity to showcase how great our students and their families are."

Oak Tree School Happenings
May 30th was a very special night for Oak Tree when we were recognized for being one of the top ten schools in the state to fund raise for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Many thanks to all who donated.
Oak Tree Grade 1 STEM Night
Led by Ms. Melissa Quidor, Oak Tree's first grade students and their parents were invited to participate in our first Grade 1 STEM Night on May 2. The mission of the Grade 1 STEM Night was to expose students to different aspects of STEM through various activities that allowed them to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics. During the event students and their parents were able to get a taste of some STEM activities that allowed them to be creative as well as work on their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Given the focus on STEM initiatives and elements in many 21
st century careers, our STEM night was meant to allow students to explore these valuable skills they may use in their future occupations.
Participants were able to attend four stations facilitated by grade 1 teachers. They included:
- Coding - using the website Kodable, students were able to try coding online in a child friendly way.
- STEM Challenge - using their creativity and imagination, students used typical household recyclables (cereal boxes, tissues boxes, paper cups, egg cartons, Styrofoam, etc..) to create a bird nest structure.
- Code and Go Mice - students took their coding skills and put them into action by programing a robotic mouse to follow through a path to a piece of cheese.
- STEM cards - students used their creativity to create different objects out of STEM materials (plays sticks, geo stix, pipe builder, manga tiles, and brain flakes)
First Grade Reading Fairs at Oak Tree
On May 7, 8, and 9 parents of Oak Tree first grade students were invited to the Third Annual Reading Fair. Previously students had chosen a book to read at home and then created a poster that highlighted the story elements from that book such as main characters, setting, the problem and the solution. Students had been practicing in their classroom how to retell a story with these elements and now they had the opportunity to show off their knowledge for their parents. Held in the cafeteria, parents circulated around and visited as many students as they liked. Questions were asked of the children and compliments were recorded by the visitors. It was a great opportunity for students to practice not only their reading skills but also their public speaking skills.
Mindfulness Matters Day at Oak Tree
By Patty Dinsmore
A year ago if you had asked an Oak Tree student what they think of when they hear the word mindfulness, they may have replied "peace" or "relaxing". If you asked them at the end of the day on May 22
nd, you may have gotten a completely different response. Oak Tree held its second Mindfulness Matters Day on May 22
nd. While many students had already been exposed to relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and yoga in their classrooms, on May 22
nd they truly understood that mindfulness is a way to keep our bodies and minds calm, healthy, and happy. Mindful bodies are peaceful and paying attention. Today's students live in a nonstop, busy and stressful world where they are constantly forced to multitask and make decisions. By participating in four different stations, Oak Tree children learned that it is okay to not think about anything sometimes, focus on breathing, and close your eyes and use your senses to savor that moment. The stations included breathing exercises and yoga, mindful coloring, a mindful scavenger hunt, and creating a heartfulness bracelet that can help you focus and may even come in handy when you are taking a test or are nervous or anxious in the future. Students came to understand that mindfulness is important to learn so that we can calm our bodies and minds in order to learn, focus, and have fun.

MILL LAKE SCHOOL NEWS
1
st grade students in Mrs. Mastoris' class participated in an "Earth Day Picnic". Students learned about the importance of this day and practiced the concept of sustainability and reducing waste. This is a perfect example of practical, hands on learning to truly understand the importance of being kind to our environment!
Kindness Campaign 2019
The students in Ms. Papandrea and Mrs. Pandolfi's class participated in the 3rd Annual Month of Kindness Campaign. The students ran Mill Lake's 3rd Annual Sock Drive to benefit the Freehold Clergy Association and Asbury Park's Saturday Soup program. They collected over 900 pairs of socks.
In addition, the students made survival bags for each police officer of the Monroe Township Police Department. Each officer was given a special bag to thank them for their hard work and dedication to our community. Chief Lloyd and a few police officers came in for a special visit with the class. They answered the student's questions and let them tour the police vehicles. One detective came back for a surprise forensics lesson where the students learned how to "lift their own fingerprints."
Students created reflection journals for Mary's Place by the Sea, a solace for women who are battling cancer. The class also spread kindness by sending valentines to their special veteran friends of Monroe Post 522 and to the children of Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
February offered the students the opportunity to give back to the community.
