Mental He alth First Aid Training

UW's Community Outreach Coordinator Samantha, and Finance Director Melissa attended an all-day mental health first aid training on May 31st.

Mental Health First Aid is a groundbreaking public education program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training  is offered in the form of an  interactive course  that presents an overview of mental illness and substance use disorders in the U.S. and introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments.

Those who take the course to certify as Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources, and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

Thank you to NAMI Hernando for hosting this informative event.

The entire United Way of Hernando County office is now certified in Mental Health First Aid. This is resourceful to our clients and phone calls from those in need of assistance.

Check out the video of Tina from NAMI Hernando speaking to UW's Community Outreach Director about the importance of understanding those who struggle with mental illness, and what NAMI does to help them.
