A message from the
CNYAMT Board Members and Chairpersons
As our Spring season of renewal comes to Central New York, our trees awaken from their winter hibernation, gardens are beginning to bloom, and the birds have returned.
The emotional climate of our country is at an all-time high and yet, the messages of hope, empathy, and strength will carry us through these unusual times.
Our celebrations have looked very different this year and the simple things we have taken for granted in our hurried world have become greatly appreciated. We are adjusting and adapting to a new world of technology, while caring for our families full time and attending to our businesses. It is obvious that CNYAMT makes a difference in the lives of our students and teachers alike. We are privileged to be part of such a loving, caring, creative, professional, and supportive group.
This newsletter celebrates our successes as well as serves as an update on upcoming events. The safety of our community is of the utmost importance to us. In consideration of our options, we have made the difficult decision to cancel some events. Others have been postponed and participants will be notified by email updates as circumstances change. CNYAMT and Artist Pianos Advanced Piano Competitions
The Elementary and Junior Divisions of the CNYAMT and Artist Pianos Advanced Competitions were held on February 29, 2020 at Park Central Presbyterian Church. Eight teachers entered five Elementary students (ages 8 and 9) and nine Junior students (ages 10-12) in the competitions. The judges were Gary Fisher and Jacob Ertl, both from Nazareth College.
The Intermediate and Senior Divisions of the CNYAMT and Artist Pianos Advanced Competitions were held on March 7, 2020 at Park Central Presbyterian Church. Seven teachers entered five Intermediate students (ages 13 and 14) and eight Senior students (ages 15-18) in the competitions. The judges were Gary Fisher and Jacob Ertl.
The winner’s recital, which was scheduled for Sunday, March 15, was cancelled due to the suspension of all activities by the church due to the coronavirus.

CNYAMT Music Camp Program
The ever-changing circumstances of today’s world leave us hopeful that summer music camps will be in session. With this in mind, the committee has decided to extend the due date for applications to June 1
st
. Keep watching for email updates.
The following is an update of the eligibility requirements. Refer to the website:

for information and links to website listings of local, national, and international music camps. Go to the drop-down menu under Fundraisers & Scholarships: Music Camp Tuition Assistance.
* The referring teacher must be an active CNYAMT member, participating in yearly events.
* The teacher must be the instructor of the major instrument the applicant will study at the camp.
* Student must be currently taking lessons from a CNYAMT member teacher and have participated in any of this year's CNYAMT events (September 2019-May 2020).
* Students in Kindergarten thru grade 12 may apply.
* First time applicants receive priority if funds are limited.

CNYAMT Senior Scholarship Competition
It is my pleasure to announce the winners of the 2020 CNYAMT Senior Scholarship Competition: Nancy Chambers, flute, and Kylee Galarneau, voice. Many thanks to our judge, conductor Grant Cooper, and to our applicants for sharing their talents with us. Congratulations!

Congratulations to
Nancy Chambers, flute
, the first prize winner of the CNYAMT Senior Scholarship Competition. She is the winner of a $1,000 scholarship. Nancy is a senior at Oneida High School, where she has participated in multiple ensembles, including wind ensemble, jazz band, concert choir, and chamber choir. She currently studies privately with Dana DiGennaro and plays flute in the Symphoria Young Artists Orchestra. Nancy also takes piano lessons with Deborah Guarneiri. Throughout her high school career she has participated in all-county bands and orchestras and area-all state bands. Next year she will be attending Syracuse University, where she will study music education.

Congratulations to
Kylee Galarneau, voice
, the second prize winner of the CNYAMT Senior Scholarship Competition. She is the winner of a $500 scholarship. Kylee is a senior at Paul V. Moore High School. She has had the privilege to perform at many of CNYAMT’s events, winning first place last year as a Junior in the High School Vocal Competition. She is one of this year’s winners of the Oswego County OCMEA Scholarship Competition. Kylee has played many roles in Paul V. Moore’s high school productions and she is also president and student director of the Drama Club. She has played Elle Woods in “Legally Blonde”, Kim MacAfee in “Bye Bye Birdie”, Baroness Schraeder in “The Sound of Music”, and Sharpay Evans in “High School Musical”. Kylee is also a member of the vocal jazz ensemble at her high school. She plans to attend Le Moyne College in the fall to study Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and she plans to study Theatre as well. Kylee would like to thank CNYAMT and its members for this wonderful opportunity, especially her vocal teacher Gayle Ross for teaching her so many valuable skills that she will use in college and beyond!

String Community
Workshop & Masterclass
An enthusiastic group of teachers, students, and parents attended the string workshop on March 7th. Our inspiring faculty, Thomas McAvaney, Zachary Sweet, Carrie Reuning-Hummel, Meghan O’Keefe, and Claire Wilcox, created a positive and dynamic musical experience for all.
A special thank you to the First Baptist Church of Manlius for providing the use of their beautiful facility. Also “instrumental” to the event were our talented accompanists; Heidi Kovarik, Jan Bookhoudt, and Eiko Hamada and big “tip of the hat” to Beth Scott, Bernadette Kessler, and Claire Wilcox for donating their time to make the workshop a great success!

CNYAMT Instrumental Competition
We have made the difficult decision to POSTPONE the CNYAMT Instrumental Competition, originally scheduled for May 2nd.
Our new rescheduled date is tentatively Saturday, June 20th.
The new winner's recital date may be June 21st, but we realize that this may conflict with high school graduation dates, so this is also tentative. We will proceed with our fingers crossed, and update you as things become clearer.
The new application due date will be two weeks prior to the rescheduled competition date, tentatively June 6th.

do not submit any applications or paperwork at this time.

Update from the HS Vocal Comp Committee

Please keep your students in good voice so they're ready for the CNYAMT High School Vocal Competition! We have quite a number of singers competing. The competition will most likely take place in June, and as promised, the committee will give everyone at least 2 weeks advance notice of exact time and place. If necessary, it will be online. Clips of winner’s performances will be featured on the website, &/or on Facebook.

Piano Festival
With much consideration, we have decided to cancel the Piano Festival this year. Students and teachers have worked hard to get their students prepared for this event, but safety is our primary concern. We do realize that there will be disappointment, but we are all in this together. We must stay strong and keep moving forward. Please stay positive and prepare and plan for next season.

Spring Luncheon Cancelled
Due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Covid-19 virus, the June 10
th
luncheon and Scores for Scholars is postponed indefinitely. Because Drumlins, the site of the luncheon, is unsure about their future, we will wait until we hear from them concerning any future plans. There will be more information concerning membership payment, Scores for Scholars, early bird sign-ups, and board elections following the next board meeting in May.

Musical Excellence
The 2020 Sally Whittle Scholarship Application for high school seniors is now available for college-bound seniors who plan to study Instrumental or Vocal Music or Music Education.
Download, fill out and print the application and instructions.
Application materials must be postmarked by May 5, 2020!
The Sally Whittle Memorial Scholarships for Musical Excellence
will be awarded at the Annual Meeting of the Syracuse Sounds of Music Association on June 1, 2020.
