Learn: "We need to talk about an injustice"
by Bryan Stevenson
|
|
In an engaging and personal talk -- with cameo appearances from his grandmother and Rosa Parks -- human rights lawyer Bryan Stevenson shares some hard truths about America's justice system, starting with a massive imbalance along racial lines: a third of the country's black male population has been incarcerated at some point in their lives. These issues, which are wrapped up in America's unexamined history, are rarely talked about with this level of candor, insight and persuasiveness.

Our #MyMagisMessage for the week comes from CSSA Student Leadership Team member, Delaney Burns, a senior Early Childhood Education major Columbus, OH! Delaney has served with Carroll Reads at St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Francis Elementary, Youth for Justice at St. Thomas Aquinas, tutoring at the Intergenerational School, and working with the Social Entrepreneurship Program at Urban Community School. All things tutoring and education!
If you had to state your life mission off the top of your head, in one sentence, what would it be?
To ensure that everyone feels worthy, seen, known, and loved in the eyes of God.
#MyMagisMessage
Service makes everything come alive. You may not be convinced of this, but in my eyes this is what service does. It helps to rejuvenate me, gives me purpose, and helps me form meaningful relationships. Service allows my heart to be strengthened. Does this mean that I fully come alive every time I serve? Not necessarily... but I am motivated to do so, even when things are hard. We can do hard things and hard things make us braver. How we frame what happens to us in our lives is strongly based on what we encounter and the way that we reflect on these experiences. This means that in trying times and points of struggle that I must challenge myself to find meaning and form understanding. This often means doing more and hopefully doing the greater amount for the glory of God--this is indeed what Magis means. Service has given me the ability to strengthen my self-awareness. To push into discomfort and acknowledge my worth in building and serving the kingdom. My life right now does not exactly align with how I envisioned it and I am sure you can relate to that. That is because there is so much more in store for us. We can still grow right here. We can still serve right here. We can still see everything come alive.
