from the president
It is hard to believe we’re in the final countdown to summer break! For those families with graduates, experiencing these last days of high school can be bittersweet. However, I am happy that we’ve recently moved beyond many pandemic restrictions and could hold in-person commencement exercises yesterday for our seniors, and that the PTSA could host in-person celebrations this spring for our teachers, staff, volunteers and GradFest today for our Class of 2021 graduates!

I also feel grateful for the opportunity to have served as your PTSA president this year. It has been rewarding to work with so many talented and dedicated parents on behalf of Langley. Our committee chairs and executive board worked tirelessly to enhance the LHS experience for students, staff and parents. Financial support from our parent community helped fund PTSA programming, teacher and staff appreciation efforts, staff development, classroom technology, virtual performing arts events, courtyard improvements and more. Boosters, guilds and class parent teams supported programs that informed and strengthened Langley. It is amazing that these efforts continued despite our unprecedented situation this year. But then, we shouldn’t be surprised — so many wonderful volunteers have given their time, energy and leadership to enrich our Langley community. Their dedication is much appreciated!

Thank you to Principal Greer and the LHS administrators for supporting Langley and the PTSA this year. A special shout-out to Tricia Poythress, who serves as the LHS liaison to the PTSA and is always an enthusiastic and active participant in our efforts. It also has been a joy to work side by side with PTSA President-Elect Clare Bradshaw, the PTSA officers, immediate past president Laura Skeen and our committee chairs. All have offered wise counsel and support every day, and I am honored and grateful to have served with them.

The Langley PTSA is in good hands next year, with a strong executive board and Clare leading the way!

~ Kitty Gonzalez, PTSA President
congrats, class of 2021!
In order to enable a more spacious and open-air event, Langley's graduation ceremony this year was held at Jiffy Lube Live, after years of commencement exercises at DAR Constitution Hall. Yesterday's weather was perfect and the venue proved to be a lovely location.

Kudos to class president Devran Johnson, who gave a wonderful address speaking to the dedication and independence of the members of the Class of 2021, as they navigated their four years at Langley including the last one and a half in the pandemic. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ..." she noted of their years, quoting Dickens. Thank you to Principal Greer, whose insightful address highlighted pandemic practices that provide helpful analogies and parallels with adult life. Kudos also to the Langley Madrigals, who recorded a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem for the ceremony.

Thank you to all the seniors for their hard work at Langley over the last four years, and to their families and to the LHS teachers, staff and administrators who have supported them. Good luck in your next adventures, graduates! The graduation program is available here.
calendar note
June 8 will be a virtual synchronous learning day (no in-person classes) for students because of the Democratic Primary Election. As with other elections, FCPS schools will be used as polling locations.

langley legacy tree
Need a graduation gift? A teacher gift? A thank you to a great coach or mentor? Give a gift that lasts – a leaf on the Legacy Tree! You choose the perfect engraving!

The Legacy Tree is growing in Langley's front entrance (across from the office) for all to enjoy for years to come. Donating a leaf (copper $50, silver $100, gold $200) or bird or acorn ($500), is a great way to pay tribute to your favorite people.

Funds raised will be used to landscape the third (and final!) Langley courtyard. The more metallic leaves on the Legacy Tree, the more actual leaves there will be in the courtyards. To order your leaves, visit the PTSA Legacy Tree page. Questions? Email chrissielavin1@gmail.com.
