Please pick up your child from his/her classroom between 3 to 3:15 pm
K-5th:
Please pick up your child from his/her classroom between 2:45 to 3:00 pm
Middle School:
Please pick up your child from the Middle School area between 3:15 to 3:30 pm
Parking:
You may exceptionally park at All Hallows Academy parking lot, on La Jolla Scenic Drive. Parking will NOT be available in the lower field lot.
Access to Marché de Noël will be through the double gate at the SDFAS main entrance.
For security reasons, the stairs leading from the preschool parking lot down to the field will NOT be open or used for access. All Marché de Noël events will be on the field.

Middle School Edeline Project: Backpacks and School Supplies needed!
|
To continue building upon this initiative under the umbrella of Youth Without Borders, our students will collect school supplies for the 200 students at the Institut Edeline in Haiti.
Please drop off the following items before the end of the day on Friday, December 14th in the box labeled Edeline Project located next to the entry gate or in Ms. Addo's classroom:
1. New or slightly used backpacks (that still have working zippers);
2. Fill them with school supplies: pens, pencils, small pencil sharpeners, markers, erasers, etc.
3. Kids' puzzles or learning games (ie rubik's cubes, dice games for math or banana grams for spelling)
4. Kids' vitamins or fever reducer medication

ÉDITO
Welcome to the holiday season! There is no time of year more magical for our children. The warmth of family, varied foods, carefully wrapped gifts, cards and special holiday traditions fill our children with joy and bedazzlement.
As I commented last year, whether you celebrate the end of the year with a menorah, Christmas tree lights, Kwanzaa candles or in some other well-lit way, SDFAS wishes you de joyeuses fêtes in a manner that honors the diverse cultures which make up our very unique community.
Of course it is also important at this time of year to recognize all of the hard work and effort put forth by our students and their teachers during the first half of the year. We have witnessed a great deal of bilingual learning and growth! And we could never forget to thank all of the parents for their unwavering support of both their children and their children's teachers.
Tomorrow, we are all looking forward to the school's annual Marché de Noël (Holiday Market and Fair). On behalf of the community, I want to sincerely thank the school's Parents Association for all of the time and effort they have put into making this most beloved event happen. The Marché will be on the field this year and I hope to see many of you there...

Vive la période des fêtes! Aucun autre moment de l'année n'est aussi magique pour nos enfants. La chaleur du foyer, les festins, les cadeaux dans leurs jolis papiers, les cartes et toutes les traditions des fêtes comblent nos enfants de joie et d'émerveillement.
Comme je l'écrivais l'an dernier, que vous célébriez la fin de l'année avec une ménorah, un sapin tout illuminé, des bougies de Kwanzaa ou tout autre forme de lumière, SDFAS vous souhaite de Joyeuses Fêtes, une expression qui prend en compte les diverses cultures formant notre exceptionnelle communauté.
Bien sûr il est également important en cette période de l'année de reconnaître tout le dur travail et les efforts de nos élèves et de leurs enseignants pendant cette première moitié de l'année. Que de progrès dans leurs apprentissages bilingues ! Et sans oublier bien sûr de remercier les parents pour leur soutien sans faille envers leurs enfants et les enseignants.
Demain, nous attendons avec impatience l'ouverture du Marché de Noël de l'école. Au nom de toute la communauté, je souhaite remercier sincèrement l'Association des Parents d'Elèves pour tout le temps et le travail qu'ils ont fournis afin de rendre possible cet événement que nous aimons tous énormément. Le Marché aura lieu sur le terrain de sport cette année et j'espère y croiser beaucoup d'entre vous.

Tomorrow: Le Marché de Noël
The 2018 edition of the Marché de Noël will take place on this Friday, December 14th from 2pm to 6pm.
If you haven't already made plans with your friends and family to enjoy dinner, music and holiday shopping, do so now! For the first time ever, we are moving our beloved Marché to the field to create a Holiday village, complete with a variety of music and lounges as well as a many free and fun activities for children to enjoy. Parking has also been expanded this year to include access to spaces at All Hallows academy.
It cannot be stressed enough that once the sun sets, it can get pretty cold. While our generous parents have provided many heaters, you must bring a sweater and scarf or a very warm coat for the children as well for yourselves and do remind your guests to come well equipped too. Bring your favorite throw and enjoy the scene by the s'mores stations.
Without further ado, we invite you to view our final list of vendors, which is a charming combination of student-run booths and hand-picked vendors from across San Diego.

Pre-elementary Winter Performance
The Pre-Elementary students and staff are proud to present you their Winter Performance on December 19

, at 9:00 a.m. in the SDFAS auditorium. The theme this year is directly inspired by our School Academic Improvement Plan and will center around natural habitats. We invite you to explore some of Earth wonderful treasures we want to teach our students to preserve like our forests, ice floe, mountains, and deserts.

Elementary Winter Performance
"Bringing back memories" is the tittle of the 2018 elementary winter show that will take place on December 19
th
, at 10:30 a.m. in the auditorium. This year the students and their teachers wanted to speak about love and family. It is the story of four children visiting their grandparents for the Holidays. While playing they travel in their grandparents' past and discover their memories. You are invited to encourage our students and to enjoy a wonderful series of acting, dancing, singing and a lot of fun.

Yesterday: The Conservatory Concert at SDFAS
The French Conservatory of Music Recital and Orchestra took place yesterday Wednesday December 12th
. The performance was amazing. Children work very hard and their progress from last year's recital was significant. For the first time in United States, a beginners Orchestra formed under the French system performed together after only three month of training. Stay tuned for the video that will be published later.
The Conservatory
The French Conservatory of Music is a direct descendant of the Conservatoire International de Musique du Paris, which was established by renowned French composers Maurice Ravel, Paul Dukas and Jacques Ibert in 1925. The French Conservatory of Music brings a rich tradition, heritage, structure, and over 90 years of expertise in musical pedagogy from Paris to San Diego.
The French Tradition
Our rigorous curriculum and teaching methods place a heavy emphasis on the acquisition of skills and techniques; however, we do not merely train students how to play the right notes. By helping students achieve higher and higher skill levels, we help them unlock that ineffable quality that underlies music, thus enabling students to reach true freedom of musical expression and fully reveal themselves artistically.
Musical Studies
With the highest level of education in mind, the French Conservatory offers a large selection of certified courses and programs adapted to students of all ages and levels, including instrument lessons, music theory, music composition, chamber groups, and orchestral programs.

In addition to the sheer joy of making music, one of the key benefits of formally studying music is its tremendous beneficial impact on personal development. Formal musical studies can instill skills and qualities that serve students throughout their lives, including higher levels of academic achievement; increased levels of focus and concentration; linear, non-linear, and abstract thinking; increased memory; greater creativity; self-discipline listening and communication skills; leadership; and team work.

Do you know The Three Little Pigs? Like most people you must have read the story or seen the cartoon. Our PK2 students created a new version of it, using tiny robots: the Ozobots. The principle is simple: the robot follows any traced line on paper, representing a drawing, an art piece or... a fairy tale character's path. Children were able to place all the elements from The Three Little Pigs on a large sheet of paper (spatial orientation), to trace the wolf's route (memorization and story segmentation), and to narrate the tale live, observing the robot-wolf literally moving along the story (oral skills). How exciting it was to create an animated RoboTale, moving in front of our eyes!

Professional Growth for our Pre-Elementary Teachers
Professional Development is key to maintain a high-quality Early Childhood Education.
SDFAS faculty members regularly attend workshops to stay on top of the best practices in Education and then share what they learned with their colleagues.
So far this year, Emilie went to Los Angeles to reflect on how to develop gross motor skills. Alexandra was in Canada to work with the French inspector on writing skills. Valérie and Stéphanie followed a training organized on SDFAS campus with the French Educational advisor on the integration of games into learning. Anne is enrolled in a yearlong class to study body percussion. Elise is taking a class on using puppets as a tool to develop language through imagination.
More training will occur during the rest of the year, starting with Patty going to the Bay Area to represent SDFAS during the California Association for the Education of Young children.

L'ÉCOLE ÉLÉMENTAIRE
Field trip at the Water Conservation Garden
SDFAS second graders visited the Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College and learned about how to save water. Ms. Smarty Plants was really funny and knowledgeable about California and native plants. We planted baby succulents and were given water saving plant seeds to bring home to grow in our gardens. Even though it was a rainy day we still had a lot of fun and learn a lot on this adventure.

Coding with Scratch.Jr on I-pad in 1st Grade

From November to the Winter Break, 1st graders had the opportunity to work in the Innovation Lab with François Trégouet. François introduced them to coding with Scratch.Jr on I-pads.
Step by step, students have learned how to choose or delete a character, how to make it bigger or smaller, change its color, make it move, speak, how to pick a background...
François explained to the kids that coding is easy, that it's like writing a sentence. You need to respect at least 3 rules: Use a capital letter at the beginning, a period at the end and your sentence has to have a meaning. Each rule is represented by a colored block: yellow for the capital Letter, red for the period and for the meaning you have two major blocks: blue for motion and green for audio.
When you know what you want your character do, you stack your blocks like puzzle pieces. Every student has created an animation based on a poem called "La ronde des champignons" (The mushrooms' dance).
During each lesson, François taught them something new and asked them to reproduce it on their I-Pads. When the First Graders have completed what François asked, each of them was allowed to create a new project, so they could experiment on their own.
Through this coding class, children have learned the concepts of instruction and sequencing. It's another way to develop numeracy and literacy as well.

African Music Presentation with Nomsa in 2nd grade
With my lessons I try to not only focus on the music but also give cultural context of the songs and activities we do. This way, we can increase empathy and understanding of others and find common attributes. I taught 'Omame', which is a Zulu folk song about children longing to be indulged by Moms with candy and cookies on their way back from the market. We also Obwisana which is a song from Ghana, used when playing a game. This song allows me to promote cooperation and collaboration.

LE COLLÈGE
End of WW1 Commemoration: November 11, 1918 - 11 November 2018
On November 30, 2018, a group of middle school students and 5
th
graders engaged their audience of middle school students, 5
th
graders and parents in a thoughtful ceremony. Students carefully crafted a presentation that involved reading of soldiers' letters, performing piano pieces and songs, and reenacting of the day of the Armistice. We all observed one minute of silence in remembrance of past generations, one hundred years ago.
Thank you to Mr. Prud'homme for spearheading the project and letting students express their awareness and emotions in their own ways. It created a special and profoundly meaningful moment in our busy school life to reflect together on past events and not forget history as to build a better present and future.
Developing student awareness and engaging them in the world - Marie-Christine Nibagwire's visit to SDFAS in 8th grade

On December 4, 2018, Marie-Christine Nibagwire, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, visited SDFAS.
The one-hour discussion with the 8th graders provided a space to discuss why people leave their countries around the world, what being a refugee means, what the international laws are, and what it feels and takes for refugees to settle down in the country that welcomes them.
"I suffered, I strived to survive. I now thrive and live to make a difference in my generation". These are Ms. Nibagwir's purposeful and powerful words. We would like to thank her for her visit, and Mr. Prud'homme for organizing the event.
Blankids for Haiti - Children Help Children Int'l
Do you remember? On October 5, 2018, the whole middle school made 43 colorful blankets for children in Haiti, partnering with the local charity "Children Help Children Int'l". The blankets were delivered at the end of October. Students also wrote and sent nice letters alongside the blankets.
Tatiana Zunshine, the president of the charity, whose Blankids is the brain child, is now happy to share with us the photos she received from Shepherds House orphanage in Haiti - the one that received our SDFAS blankets.
In her own words: "You can see the kids (with smiling faces:) holding our blankets. Hope these photos will make our kids smile as well. Please tell them I said "hi" and that they are the best :)))!"
