Heather Howard
Heath Technical Advisor, American Refugee Committee (ARC)

Heather spoke to us from ARC HQ in Minneapolis, MN to discuss her career path, her current role at ARC, and ARC's biggest strengths in the global community health.

"We work in some of the toughest communities in the world...and ARC is able to get there. ARC is able to deliver health services, get community health workers out into the field to deliver vaccines and health information. We are there, and that's absolutely our strength."
New Reports, Studies, Guides & Tools

Institute for Reproductive Health
This how-to guide provides the tools and instructions to implement the GREAT Project, an evidence-based international development intervention that improved gender norms related to sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence in Northern Uganda.

Guide des sages-femmes (A Book for Midwives)
Hesperian Health Guides
Hesperian has just released French language editions of several titles, including A Book for Midwives and Where There is No Dentist. With updates to reflect the most recent medical treatments and medications, these resources provide reliable information and strategies to improve community health in French-speaking countries where accurate and accessible health information is so crucially needed.

Malaria Consortium
Malaria Consortium's Pneumonia Diagnostics project aimed to identify the most accurate, acceptable, scalable and user-friendly respiratory rate timers and pulse oximeters for the diagnosis of pneumonia symptoms in children by community health workers and first-level health facility workers.

ICF International/The DHS Program
This report examines levels and trends in poverty, health status, and use of health services among poor children living in large cities in low- and middle-income countries, and compares their health status and use of services to those of their other urban, rural, and non-poor counterparts. Despite the narrowing of gaps in many health outcomes between poor and non-poor and between urban and rural areas, the persistence of poverty and increases in extreme poverty in large cities in low- and middle-income countries remain cause for concern. Find more DHS reports here.

FHI 360/FANTA
Through the use of the body mass index wheel, created by FANTA and the Boston Children's Hospital, health care workers can quickly calculate BMI and BMI-for-age as well as determine a client's nutritional status using a single time-saving tool.

Manoff Group/SPRING
The Strengthening Results, Partnerships, and Innovations in Nutrition Globally (SPRING) project has developed two resources to help address anemia from a multisectoral and data-driven perspective. The Landscape Analysis Guidance and tool provides detailed information to policy makers and program implementers on how to gather, understand, and use anemia-related data. The District Assessment Tool for Anemia (DATA) assists program managers in strengthening anemia programming at the district level.

Living Goods
This RCT working paper evaluating the impact of the Living Goods and BRAC community health worker model in Uganda is now available on the Center for Economic Policy and Research. The RCT, led by IPA and JPAL, demonstrates a 27 percent reduction in under-five mortality, with similar effects on infant and neonatal mortality. See a summary here.

This guide presents eight CRS innovations used by Encouraging Positive Practices for Improving Child Survival (EPPICS) that led to statistically significant increases in maternal and child health indicators. Development workers can use this guide to increase their familiarity with these high-impact strategies and consider using them in projects seeking sustainable improvement in maternal and child health in rural settings.

International Union Against Tuberculosis & Lung Disease
This course that can be completed entirely online and at your own pace. It covers how to diagnose and treat childhood MDR TB, including programmatic considerations. The course is interactive and will ask you to make decisions about fictional cases.  The course is designed for healthcare workers at the secondary level of the healthcare system.

IntraHealth International, Medtronic Foundation
This policy brief makes the case for frontline providers as critical elements in the health system to respond to NCDs, especially in developing countries and resource constrained settings. It  braids together distinct global policy efforts with other aligned initiatives, and it highlights existing evidence on the role of community health workers in NCD screening and monitoring, through task shifting.

Pathfinder
The set of cue cards, updated in 2016 to reflect changes in the WHO's Medical Eligibility Criteria, is designed to help a range of community- and facility-based providers to counsel adolescents and young people on their contraceptive options. The cue cards address: combined oral contraceptives, progestin-only pills, emergency contraception, male and female condoms, injectables, implants, intrauterine devices, and the lactational amenorrhea method.
