Real-world Robotics
On December 8, Lakehill's Robotics team made its debut at the FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifier at the Lowery Freshman Center in Allen, Texas. The FIRST Robotics Competition is an international high school robotics competition that gives students real-world engineering experience. The Lakehill Bionicles (team #14904) and their robot, Thok, had a strong showing for their first outing--placing 19th among the 28 scheduled participants from across North Texas.
During the event, the Lakehill Bionicles competed in five matches, two of which their alliance won. In each match, the team was randomly paired with an alliance partner to compete against two other teams, completing tasks such as autonomous movement, latching on to a Mars lander, moving cubes and spheres representing gold and silver unobtanium to the lander and depot, and parking in a crater.
The three-student driving team consisted of combinations of co-captain
Luke Jerome, co-captain
Jason Herron-Loza,
Elijah McMillan, and
Koby Watkins. Under the leadership of Jerome, students
Sumner Born, Watkins, and McMillan worked to fine tune the robot between matches. Co-captain
Hao Zhao and
Sarah Smith worked on adjusting the code for the autonomous and driver portions of the match, as well as providing input to the build team.
James Freeman kept track of scheduling and organization, making sure everything and everyone was where they needed to be.
Ryan Douglas,
Preston Bied,
Michael Skellie, and Zhao were the team ambassadors, communicating with alliance partners before each match to strategize. The team is coached by
Jennifer Herta and
Mitch Musselman.
The team would like to give special thanks to Lakehill parent and team Technical Advisor
John Gorman for taking so much time out of his schedule in the days before the meet to advise the team, and
John Trout for making sure the team got to the meet and back safely on the bus.
The team is excited to have another chance at advancing to regionals at their second qualifier in Ferris, Texas, on Saturday, January 26. Learn more about FIRST robotics and the FIRST Tech Challenge

Third Grade Trip Around Texas
Travelers to Lakehill's cafeteria on December 6, were treated to a fascinating tour of Texas as third grade students showcased their study of the state, sharing information on the history, geography, climate, citizens, and landmarks of a variety of Texas towns, from Abilene to Amarillo and from Canyon to College Station. Each created a travel brochure, highlighting the top attractions of their destination.
Some students dressed the part, outfitted in 10-gallon hats, college jerseys, or oilfield uniforms. Texas culinary favorites, including brisket, chips and queso, Dr. Pepper, Blue Bell ice cream, and What-a-burger hamburgers, gave visitors a true taste of the Lone Star state.
With third grade students serving as tour guides, visitors wandered from town to town, exploring the sights, sounds, and tastes from the great state of Texas.

A Season of Sharing
The holidays at Lakehill are a special time when we celebrate life's blessings and give thanks for all that we have. It is also a time when we share our good fortune with those who have less.
Parade of Gifts
One of the special traditions at the Lakehill Lower School Winter Program is our annual Parade of Gifts. Each student brings a wrapped gift, which will be placed under the tree and later distributed to needy children in the community. Please help us by sending a wrapped gift to school!
Holiday Luncheon
This annual event is sponsored by the Senior Class and provides a festive lunch and holiday celebration for many elderly residents of East Dallas and the Lakehill family itself. Students join the visiting senior citizens in a holiday meal along with games and songs to celebrate the season. The regular cafeteria service is closed for this event; students must either reserve a meal at the luncheon or bring a sack lunch. The cost is $3 for Lower School students and $5 for Middle School students.

Senior Spotlight
National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates
In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:
NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Jason Herron-Loza
Jason Herron-Loza has attended Lakehill for six years. He has participated in Varsity Soccer, Cross Country, Track, and Cheer, as well as the Magic Club and International Club. He enjoys building, and is a co-captain of the Lakehill Robotics team, so it is not surprising that he plans to study engineering when he graduates. He is undecided where he will attend, but plans to serve his country after college. Outside of school, Jason's favorite activity is running. His favorite class at Lakehill has been Latin, because of his teacher Ms. John.
When Jason leaves Lakehill, he is going to miss his friends, and being on the Cross Country team. He hopes that more students at Lakehill continue to join the team.
Jason’s advice to the younger Warriors is, "Get all your work done, and stay out of trouble." Jason also adds, "Have fun and socialize by making tons of friends."
