CSTP Celebrates 15 Years
The saying "time flies" - well it's true! CSTP is excited to celebrate its 15th birthday. Started in 2003 by its founder and first Executive Director Jeanne Harmon, CSTP has made its way in the education world to support and bolster the policies, research, practices, systems and professionals who are teachers and whose work is to support high quality teaching in service to student learning and growth. For you trivia buffs, here's some fun factoids about CSTP.
- CSTP has employed just 16 people over its 15 year existence. The organization feels strongly that practitioners hold a wealth of knowledge and expertise and to this end CSTP has had great success utilizing educators as creators and developers for products, tools, resources and processes for the field.
- There have been 24 teacher bloggers who are writing or have written for CSTP's blog Stories From School. The bloggers write about the intersection of policy and practice and the blog has been named one of the best education blogs by the Washington Post. Check it out at www.storiesfromschool.org.
- CSTP is part of a unique long-standing partnership with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Washington Education Association that supports National Board candidates and NBCTs. Washington is 3rd in the nation for most NBCTs with 10,135.
- CSTP is an approved clock hour provider in Washington and has processed over 25,000 clock hours - that's A LOT of clock hours! This is both a service CSTP provides to districts and other organizations that offer professional development and also speaks to the volume of professional learning opportunities CSTP provides to educators.
Please leave us a birthday message or a way CSTP has impacted you - https://bit.ly/2NY4hkF.

Teacher Takeover on CSTP Instagram
If you are not following CSTP on Instagram yet, head over to our account to check-out our Teacher Takeovers. On October 16, we featured NBCT Shannon Cotton from Camas as she hosted her weekly after-school professional development session. Cleverly coined "Let's TACO 'Bout Teaching and Learning" their weekly taco Tuesday sessions features a new topic each week and visits by a taco food truck...yes an actual food truck. We love your ingenuity, Camas!
Be sure to check out our account on November 8 as CSTP blogger, NBCT and Fulbright Teacher, Lynne Olmos, takes over to showcase a special visit from Washington State Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna. Originally from El Salvador, Claudia fled the war-torn nation with her family at the age of 14 and went on to earn her MA in urban planning and an MFA in poetry, worked as a K-12 teacher and became Seattle's first Civic Poet. Thank you to Lynne for not only sharing this experience with her students, but all of the Instagram community!
Are you an educator who is interested in taking over our 'gram? We are looking to line-up monthly takeovers through the end of the school year. If you are interested in potentially taking over our account during the 2018-19 school year, please apply at https://goo.gl/forms/m8me3LMAWrMan1C53.

Paul Allen's recent passing has prompted much press about an amazing man who owned two professional sports teams (Portland Trailblazers and Seattle Seahawks) and his philanthropic giving to science research and social causes, among others. One significant and less highlighted way Allen has impacted education in Washington State is through investments made to support new teachers. From 2006 - 2010 CSTP was a recipient of the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation which prompted a very important body of work focused on novice teachers and the systems that support them. This included the development of:
- Standards for Beginning Teachers
- Statewide system of mentor roundtables
- Regional mentoring consortium
- Statewide mentoring conferences
- District implementation case studies
- Principal preparation modules on how to support new teachers
- Teacher retention studies
Much of this work has informed the state's support for new teachers and the development of stronger support systems. We want to give a huge shout-out and thank you to Paul Allen and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation for making a contribution 12 years ago that has led to long-lasting change and spurred continued priority and focus on the retention of new teachers in our state.
