Correction: Move-In Day Thursday, August 23rd
|
In our first edition, we noticed an important mistake regarding the date for Move-In Day.
Please mark your calendars for
Thursday, August 23, 2018 for new student move-in day. All new students will move in this day, unless participating in Pre-Orientation, Varsity Athletics, Explore or Discover for international students, special scholars programs, or another early arrival program.

With high school behind you, it's important to make sure you've started working on your June tasks. You might also want to preview your July and August tasks.

Wondering what to pack? Read below for some tips, must haves, and must avoids.
|
|
Your copy of Bear Facts, the Common Reading Program book Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, and
the Common Reading Program reader's guide should arrive to your mailbox in early June if you will not join us on campus for SOAR or Summer Start this June. If you plan to attend SOAR or Summer Start, you'll pick up your copies of these publications on campus.
For electronic copies of these resources, visit the following links:
Bear Fact
s will serve as your guide to anything and everything you need to know prior to arriving to campus in August. Read through
Bear Facts for information such as important dates, student stories, and an overview of what you can expect at Bear Beginnings: New Student Fall Orientation.
On Friday of Bear Beginnings: New Student Fall Orientation, you will be participating in a faculty-led discussion about the themes addressed in the Common Reading Program book,
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
by Dai Sijie
.
We encourage you to visit the
Common Reading Program website
to learn about program-related events, resources related to this year's book, and the history of the program at WashU.
You can also learn more about the Common Reading Program contest!

There is still time to register for a Pre-Orientation Program!
Registration closes on August 1st.
Pre-Orientation (Pre-O) programs are a great way to start your WashU experience. It is your opportunity to work closely with a campus organization, gain valuable leadership skills, get a jump start on being involved on campus, and meet other students with similar interests. You will also be able to move in early and begin to learn the ins and outs of Washington University's campus before the formal
orientation program.
The following programs still have openings:
- Connect 4
- First-Year Leadership Experience (FLEX)
- Freshmen Press
- Gateway to Global Citizenship
- Habitat for Humanity
- Innovation Nation: Social Impact Through Design
- Leadership Through Service (LTS)
- Startup W(U)
- Student Union: LEAD WashU
- World of Politics
|
Bear Beginnings: New Student Orientation is the signature orientation program for WashU. While some students may have chosen to participate in SOAR or Pre-Orientation, Bear Beginnings is for the entire Class of 2022.
Please note there is no registration process for Bear Beginnings since everyone is required to attend.
Bear Beginnings will kick-off with Move-In Day on Thursday, August 23rd followed by Convocation that evening. The next three days are filled with important academic meetings, information sessions about student life at WashU, and all-class social events.

Family Ties
|
|
Please let your parents and family know that
Family Ties
is a great way to keep up with what's happening at WashU.
Family Ties
is a quarterly e-newsletter that bridges the information gap between Washington University family members and life on campus.
Family Ties focuses its content on aspects of student life on campus at the time of year the publication appears. The goal is to provide parent and family members with information they won't find in other campus publications.

Ready to leave your mark at WashU? Each Class on campus creates their own logo, designed by a member of that Class, and it's time for the Class of 2022 to get creative! If you'd like to submit a design, here are the requirements:
- Submit you design as a 1' x 1' PDF
- It must have a solid colored background
- Use only the text of your class year (2022)
- The logo design and color will be voted on separately by the entire class, so submit a black/white version.
Email firstyearcenter@wustl.eduwith your submissions by Friday, July 13, 2018. Voting on logos will happen in mid-July through the next Bear Bulletin - keep an eye out for your chance to vote!
To give you an idea of what the logos generally look like, here are the winning logos from the past few years. Good luck!
