The Boundary Point
Volume 7, Issue 12, December 2019
Four Point Learning
In April 2018, an appeal of a decision which simply projected township road lines by straight line extension across accreted land, was released and published on the CanLII reporting service and database. Within hours, it disappeared from CanLII and thereafter remained unavailable on the open source reporting service.
....
The issues considered in Duarte v. Ontario are of interest to land surveyors and real estate lawyers alike since the Divisional Court found the decision below unreasonable and ordered the Minister’s delegate to conduct the hearing further and to consider additional evidence and submissions to properly address all of the issues. Do township road lines which can be confirmed in a hearing under the Surveys Act include their extension or projection over accreted land?

St. Catharines hospital demolition reveals hidden tunnels, underground swimming pool
The Standard
There isn't much left now. A thin column of floors and part of the building's brick exterior, framed by piles of rubble, are all that remain of the old St. Catharines hospital on Queenston Street.
It won't be long until a wrecking crew topples what remains.
What cannot be seen at street level are a series of chambers, tunnels and basements — architectural leftovers from the hospital's past — that reside underground.

The art of the Roman surveyors emerges from newly discovered pavements in Pompeii
EurekAlert
The technical skills of the Roman agrimensores - the technicians in charge of the centuriations (division of the lands) and of other surveys such as planning towns and aqueducts - are simply legendary.
....
These technicians were called Gromatics due to their chief working instrument, called Groma. It was based on a cross made of four perpendicular arms each bringing cords with identical weights, acting as plumb-lines. The surveyor could align with extreme precision two opposite, very thin plumb-lines with reference poles held at various distances by assistants or fixed in the terrain, in the same manner as palines (red and white posts) are used in modern theodolite surveying.

Drone's-eye view captures changing coastlines and capelin habitat
WWF program aims to track minute changes in beaches and coves in Newfoundland
CBC News
Brandon Tilley uses joysticks on a control panel to gingerly manoeuvre a drone up into the sky above Lance Cove, Conception Bay.
It's cold and the wind is verging on bitter as Tilley peers into the screen of a tablet, looking at what the drone is photographing 40 metres up.
"What I'm doing here in this first stage now is I'm flying around and getting some general photos of the area before I start my actual systematic survey."

Squamish Nation votes to approve massive apartment development in Vancouver
The Globe and Mail
The Squamish Nation got overwhelming approval from its more than 800 voting members to move forward with a massive rental-apartment development on Vancouver’s central-city waterfront – a project the nation is saying is a first of this magnitude for any Indigenous group in the world.
They say the 11-tower, 6,000-unit Senakw project on Kits Point will provide a model for other developments on reserve lands the nation holds throughout North Vancouver, as the Squamish aim for as much economic return as they can possibly get from their land.

Mentoring in the Age of Automation
xyHt
As old-timers retire and fewer young people enter surveying, we are at a turning point where mentoring is crucial to the future of the profession, but we will need to adapt to mentor well.
Land surveying is an ever-evolving profession. New technology, new coordinate systems, and new datums all make it difficult to keep up with the latest trends and the newest developments. Even for someone like me who grew up in the age of technology, at times it is difficult to wrap my head around.

Kerr: Remembering one little ship at Pearl Harbor
InsideNova
She was once a rum runner’s yacht or so the old timers told arriving new sailors. The new arrivals aboard the USS Sumner (AGS-5) didn’t know whether to believe it or not. She had a sleek design with a long prow and didn’t fit the image of a conventional Navy vessel. The reality, however, was that she was built in 1915 as a submarine tender and switched identities in 1940 to become a hydrographic survey vessel.
....
The Sumner, throughout it all, caused as much damage to the attacking enemy aircraft as she could and claimed the downing of at least three aircraft. Given that U.S. forces only downed 29 Japanese aircraft that day, it was an impressive performance for a hydrographic survey ship.

NIAGARA DISCOVERIES: Holland Land Co.'s West Transit Line
Niagara Gazette
Not long ago, a man called looking for information on his family who had lived in Niagara County in the early to mid-19th century. He remembered some of his ancestors talking about a long north-south road that ran from outside Buffalo all the way to Lockport but he could not recall the name of the road. When told it was Transit Road, he then remembered but asked how the road got its name. It’s a question that has come up over the years, along with other inquiries concerning the very early history of the surveying and mapping of this area.
