Feeling bad that you haven’t spent this month baking perfect loaves of homemade bread like everyone else on social media? Well, add “estate planning” to the list of things you can feel guilty about not doing while you’re stuck at home.

We can’t help you with your sourdough starter, but we can help you prepare a will, powers of attorney and other documents you need now more than ever. In this issue of “The Elder Law Minute,” we share the emergency estate planning steps to take now – and why DIY is better for face masks than wills. We also highlight key provisions of the CARES Act that could impact older adults.

Have questions? We’re working remotely and here to help.
APRIL'S NEWS TO KNOW
DIY Face Masks, Not Your Will
If you ever needed a sign that it’s time to create an estate plan, COVID-19 is it. But leave the DIY for kitchen experiments and makeshift masks – estate planning is an area better left to the professionals.
How the CARES Act Could Affect Your Estate Planning
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act of 2020 (CARES) is the biggest economic stimulus package ever signed into law . Its intent is to help healthcare systems, workers, small businesses and retirees financially navigate an unprecedented time in our world as COVID-19 continues to upend life as we know it.

Remote Notary and Witnessing Now Available
Even during stay-at-home orders, Generation Law is here to help you get your planning done – remotely and safely. On March 26, Governor J.B. Pritzker signed an executive order allowing remote notary and witnessing for estate planning documents during this crisis (once the crisis is over, things go back to “normal”).

It’s one of many executive orders Pritzker has signed recently, which cover everything from cancelling elective surgeries to extensions on applications for growing marijuana. If you geek out on this stuff like we do, check out the full list of COVID-related orders here .

Long story short: we’re here, we’re doing video consults and we can help you put the right documents in place.
