This Week's Commentary

The Very Rev. Troy Mendez, Dean

December 13, 2018

Jesus said, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything
that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with
you always, to the end of the age."
                                                              -- Matthew 28:18-20

The time has come for an extraordinary event in the life of Trinity Cathedral and the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona. On Friday, December 14 at 6:00 p.m., Trinity will celebrate the Ordination to the Sacred Order of Priests for two outstanding deacons, The Rev. David Chavez and The Rev. Susana Santiba ñ ez.

What is unique about Friday's ordination service is that it will take place in the context of the traditional Latin American celebration of Las Posadas, or simply, Posadas. Many Spanish-speaking countries re-enact Posadas during Advent to remember Joseph and Mary traveling from house to house in Bethlehem looking for "posada" or shelter. In some countries, these processions can last several days, with stops at every house along the way for sweets, coffee, singing, and celebration.

Trinity Cathedral's version of Posadas will have six stops around the cathedral and diocesan campuses. The mariachis will accompany everyone in a candlelight procession, singing festive songs that remind us that the Holy Family had a difficult time finding shelter. Finally, the last stop in our quest for "posada" is in front of the great doors of the cathedral, where the mariachis joyfully sing, " Entren santos peregrinos ! (Enter, holy pilgrims). The procession then heads into the cathedral, followed by a grand procession of the Trinity Cathedral choir, clergy, the ordinands, and our bishop.

Friday's ordinations are a dream come true for our bishop, The Rt. Rev. Kirk Stevan Smith, who challenged the diocese to raise up native Spanish-speakers and form them as priests. Our diocese could not be any more fortunate to have both David and Susana as ordinands to the priesthood. Trinity, specifically, is extremely fortunate to have David as one of our clergy.

Several years ago, David Chavez arrived at the doors of Trinity seeking a ministry partnership with his (then) employer, Fuller Seminary. Little did we know at the time that his calling at Trinity was far greater than just field education placement for seminarians. His stellar educational background, along with his willingness to serve alongside Trinity's Spanish-speaking ministries led to much more involvement, leading to David entering the discernment process for ordained ministry.

David has demonstrated faithfulness to the Episcopal Church, a love for learning, and has offered his gift of preaching to both the English and Spanish-speaking communities at Trinity and Iglesia Santa Maria in West Phoenix. He has gained the support and respect of many of his colleagues, and on Friday, his church communities, his children, members of his friends and family, and many others gather with us to commemorate this extraordinary feat of accomplishment and blessing.

Join us on Friday to invite the Holy Spirit's presence upon all of us, but most especially upon the ordinands, as Bishop Smith ordains them as priests. The Rev. Canon Anthony Guillen, Director of Ethnic Ministries for the Episcopal Church, will preach. A great reception will follow afterwards, with a pi ñ ata, too!

Both David and Susana are living into Christ's call upon their lives. We are also following a call, as we continue living into our mission: Welcoming all to be transformed in Christ, through worship, fellowship, and service.

Join us for a true celebration. God is good, all the time!

In Christ's peace and love,
A Message from Cathedral Treasurer, Don Marshall

Advent greetings to all of you! If you haven't made your pledge to Trinity for 2019, I encourage you to do so before year-end. We've heard from many of you already, including the entire Chapter and all of Trinity's clergy and staff. More than 150 pledges have been turned in, and that's great news!

Our pledges provide the foundation for our annual budget and planning process. They represent a significant majority of our annual income, and knowing what we can expect going in to the new year allows us to lay out the Cathedral's plans. Trinity, its clergy, staff and congregation, do much great work in our community. That is something we want to continue and grow.

You are invited to complete a pledge card online  at www.trinitycathedral.com . It's fast and very easy to do. If you would like to discuss your pledge, or if you have any questions at all, you may contact me via the cathedral offices, (602) 254-7126, or please contact The Very Rev. Troy Mendez at (602) 254-7126 ext. 308 or troy@trinitycathedral.com Thank you for your ongoing care and support of our beloved cathedral.

Service of Darkness and Light

Join us on Friday, December 21st at 7:00 p.m. for our Annual Service of Darkness and Light.

For many of us, Christmas is a bittersweet time of year. It is a time for remembering both persons and events that have been a part of our lives in the past, but that are now changed or gone. This is the time of year with the longest nights, so around this time we offer a quiet, meditative worship service that makes time for remembering, sharing our hurting places with God.
Come get your apple!

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols for Christmastide will be held on Sunday, 23 December at 6:00 PM (harp prelude begins at 5:30 PM).  In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the service's inception at King's College, Cambridge, music by three previous directors will be highlighted.  Arrive early to ensure a seat for this traditionally standing-room only service!

Just a few of the fantastic volunteers helping out at the Garfield Christmas Party. The crafts team and the kids had fun making Christmas ornaments and decorations to take home. Santa was there to meet the kids and help the Garfield teachers with the distribution of over 1000 toys. It was a beautiful day, the kids had fun and so did all the volunteers!

Thank you, thank you for all your support, love and help in making a special day absolutely wonderful!
New Reading Program at Garfield School

Garfield Elementary is seeking enthusiastic volunteers willing to give less than one hour a week (2:40 p.m. - 3:20 p.m.) for Kindergarten through Second Grade students. Trinity Cathedral volunteers will provide extra reading support to students using materials that teachers have selected and prepared.

With your help, kids in our neighborhood will be able to make progress with letter recognition and sounds and become better readers.

The volunteer timeframe will be from January 7 - May 22. Literacy is the foundation for all learning! Please consider helping these young children gain confidence and progress with their reading. If you are interested, contact The Rev. Myra Kingsley, Deacon at myra@trinitycathedral.com or call (602) 625-5774.

Foundations- Children, Youth and Family Ministries

On Sundays we have Christian education and formation for ALL ages. All children and youth are encouraged to attend our offerings from 11:15 a.m.-12:00 p.m. There will be opportunities for fellowship and service throughout the year for all ages. Calendars of events will be provided and daily information will be posted on the Children, Youth, and Family Ministries white board in Olney Gallery.

Wonder- The Nursery at Trinity opens on Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and is available until 1:00 p.m. (closing by 12:00 p.m. if no children have joined us) in our nursery facility adjacent to our Godly Play model classroom in the southeast corner of our Cathedral campus. Wonder is available for infants to the 4th birthday and offers loving care to children, in order that their parents (and adult caregivers) may attend worship, education and Christian formation, and my participate more fully in the life of the Cathedral. Each of our paid staff is certified in Safeguarding God's Children, as required by our Diocese and Cathedral communities. Summer hours continue through this Sunday (9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.).

Godly Play- I Wonder occurs  from 11:15 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in our Godly Play model classroom (the Atwood wing) in the southeast corner of our Cathedral campus. Godly Play is available for all children age three (3) through the 6th grade. While Wonder is available through the 4th birthday, and Trinitas is available to youth beginning in the 6th grade, families with children and youth are encouraged to self-select attendance in Godly Play instead, as they may deem helpful, developmentally. Godly Play helps children to explore their faith through story, to gain religious language and to enhance their spiritual experience through wonder and play. Based on Montessori principles and developed using a spiral curriculum, the Godly Play method serves children through early, middle and late childhood and beyond. We welcome four (4) new storytellers this year, to include Jana Sundin, the Canon for Children's Ministries for the Diocese of Arizona. Godly Play is provided in English for children from our English and Spanish-speaking services. Each storyteller and door helper is certified in Safeguarding God's Children, as required by our Diocese and Cathedral communities.

Trinitas - Youth at Trinity occurs  from 11:15 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in our youth room (adjacent to the Olney Gallery) in the northeast corner of our Cathedral campus. Trinitas is available for all youth grades 6th-12th. Trinitas offers youth opportunities to engage the "Teen Text" curriculum on Christian education Sundays and engage, inter-generationally, in service and fellowship Sundays as well. The lectionary-based Teen Text curriculum guides students into the text of scripture, and through a series of open-ended, text-related questions, as they begin to see the Bible as a vital, dynamic, relevant resource-one that can inform them throughout their lives. Teen Text helps youth to connect the text on the page with events in their daily lives. Youth are also encouraged to invite classmates and friends to join them for fellowship and fun throughout the year. Trinitas is provided in English for youth from our English and Spanish-speaking services. Each Trinitas mentor is certified in Safeguarding God's Children, as required by our Diocese and Cathedral communities.

December Art Show
Being and Becoming: Art by Patrice Al-Shatti and Daniel Prendergast an exhibit of watercolors and photographs that explore transformation.

Al-Shatti's watercolors offer a macro lens view that transforms her subject matter into beautiful abstract paintings. She explores the colors and textures of the plant world with the goal of bringing beauty and a fresh appreciation to viewers, reminding us that everything is a miracle when we really look. Al-Shatti states, "I believe in transformational healing and my life as an evolving artist is built around this focus." Al-Shatti studied at the Lorenzo de' Medici Institute in Italy. She was highlighted in a one-woman show at Paradise Valley Community College and Her work has been exhibited by the Arizona Artists' Guild and the Glendale Arts Council and is in the permanent collection of Midwestern University. Al-Shatti is the founder of the fine arts collective and gallery at All Saints' Episcopal Church.

Prendergast takes a figure of the Mother of God into his garden to explore eternity and temporality. Through the depth of field and composition this work evokes many feelings and questions. He suggests these questions could be about: the lineage of mother goddesses across cultures; and Mary as the representation of female divinity. Prendergast remembers childhood, "...staring at statues in church, watching and waiting for movement and miracles." and now reflects on the notion of "Being and Becoming." Prendergast is a member of the Five15Arts collective and the Arizona Artist Guild. He has exhibited his work at the Shemer Art Center and Museum, First Studio, and {9} Gallery. Prendergast is a retired art teacher from the Peoria Unified School District and photographs, draws, and paints at his home and garden.
