Reduce Your Stress to Protect Your Heart
You follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly, drink moderately and quit smoking ... all steps to promote good heart he
alth, so why are your blood pressure
numbers are on the uptick? Have you considered your stress levels?
Stress, whether from home, school or in the workplace, can have a very real physiological effect on the body. Prolonged elevated levels of cortisol, the fight or flight hormone that is released into the blood stream during periods of stress, can cause cardiovascular disease, increased blood pressure, digestive and memory issues, headaches, obesity and diabetes.
83% of US workers report work-related stress; being able to recognize and counter chronic stress is essential to optimal physical and mental well-being. In addition to the aforementioned habits, adopting a regular sleep routine, reducing exposure to environmental pollutants and finding healthy outlets to cope with stress such as yoga or meditation can help minimize health risks. Neurofeedback brain-wave training is another helpful tool that trains the brain to focus on the task at hand, and not to become distracted or panicked. This non-invasive therapy has the added benefit of helping with insomnia issues, enabling the brain to produce normal brain-wave patterns to help promote restorative sleep.
If you're finding that life's stressors are taking a toll on your health, despite your best efforts, give our office a call. Our team includes expert therapists who can help you pinpoint your challenges and develop a comprehensive plan to help get you on a healing path to physical and emotional wellness. 631.265.1223.

The Fallout from Sleep Issues
Is your child irritable or inattentive at home or in school? Is she showing signs of forgetfulness, depression or anxiety? Does he have frequent colds or infections? There may be a very simple reason for you child's symptoms/ behaviors: lack of quality sleep.
Studies show that almost half the children in the U.S. do not get adequate sleep, defined as at least 9 hours for children 6-12 years of age, and at least 8 hours for those 13-17 years old. Deficiency in restorative rest affects a child's health and development in all areas including physical growth and can have a lifelong impact.
Behaviors stemming from poor sleep, i.e. focus issues, meltdowns, and hyperactivity, that occur when children are exhausted can often mimic those associated with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); for those with a true ADHD diagnosis, inadequate sleep can worsen conduct issues. Of particular concern are children with sleep issues who are erroneously prescribed behavior-modifying medications to control their "ADHD" symptoms.
Researchers maintain that sleep deprivation in childhood can actually change the way the brain is wired. In certain instances, sleeping issues can be traced to abnormal brain-wave patterns that cause dysregulation in the brain, triggering insomnia. Neurofeedback is a non-drug, non-invasive approach to enabling sustained, restorative sleep. In addition, studies have shown significant improvements in other related issues through neurofeedback training including restless leg syndrome, bruxism (teeth grinding), sleep walking and nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting).
Some tips to improve sleep hygiene: Encourage regular exercise earlier in the day for your child - at least 4 hours prior to bedtime - which can help destress and promote a deeper sleep. Create a bedtime routine ... and stick to it! Consistently settling down at night and getting up at a set time every day, even on weekends, sets the body's internal clock and helps in achieving restorative sleep. Eliminate screen time one hour prior to bedtime; keep the room cool and dark. Both help to settle the brain and body for a night of rest. Remember, establishing good sleep routines not only promotes healthy development, growth and learning in the childhood years, but sets the stage for lifetime of healthy sleep habits.
If insomnia or other sleep issues are impacting your child's or your own quality of life, give our office a call to learn about the array of holistic tools we offer than can help you rest easy. 631.265.1223.

Massage Therapy Provides Hope For Nerve Pain from Chemotherapy
For cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment, side effects from these powerful medications can take a toll on the entire body as they fight to destroy cancer cells, leaving in their wake a path of pain, nausea, fatigue/weakness and balance issues. Tingling, burning and loss of sensation or numbness in the hands or feet is another
common treatment-related side effect known as Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN). Aside from discomfort, CIPN is particularly dangerous as its neurotoxic effects can cause cause falls and other injuries due to damage to nerves that control sensation and mobility. While some symptoms persist only during treatment phase, many cancer patients continue to experience symptoms long after chemotherapy is finished, affecting quality of life.
Previous studies have shown acupuncture and neurofeedback therapy to be effective modalities for
alleviating CIPN pain. Now a new study from the Integrative Medicine Center at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center reveals that massage therapy is beneficial for neuropathic pain. Study participants reported a sustained reduction in lower extremity pain up to six weeks after completion of massage treatment 2-3 times per week for 30 minutes.
If you are cancer survivor now battling the aftereffects of chemotherapy treatments, please contact our office to learn how massage, neurofeedback therapy and acupuncture can provide an effective integrated approach to alleviating the pain of CIPN. 631.265.1223.
