2021 CONFERENCE SESSION
TB in Special Populations:
Across the Lifespan
Friday, June 11, 2021 *  3:00 PM – 5:00 PM Eastern Time

Treating tuberculosis (TB) is a different journey for each patient and care team. Age is one of the factors that can increase TB risk and complicate its treatment.
  • How can pregnancy affect the presentation, treatment, and management of TB?
  • How should the clinician test and treat neonates and children under 5 years old?
  • What complications surround the treatment and management of elderly patients with TB?

This session will focus on TB in some of the most vulnerable and difficult to treat populations: pregnant women, neonates, children <5 years of age, and the elderly. Presentations will provide a variety of perspectives from that of a TB survivor who was pregnant when diagnosed to unique challenges presented to clinicians and nurses by the incredibly young and older patient populations.

Dr. Armitige is an Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Tyler. She serves on the staff of Heartland National TB Center as the Assistant Medical Director and is currently Co-Medical Director of the San Antonio, Texas TB clinic. In these capacities, she lectures nationally and internationally on tuberculosis and cares for both adult and pediatric patients with TB at a large metropolitan clinic. Dr. Armitige was previously at the McGovern Medical School in Houston where she did her residency in Med/Peds and a fellowship in ID and served as faculty there caring for both TB- and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. In addition to participating in clinical studies involving treatment shortening regimens for latent TB infection (LTBI), Dr. Armitige conducts biomedical research in the pathogenesis of TB. She led the PRACHITi study in India, investigating the impact of pregnancy and HIV on the immune response to M. tuberculosis. She also chaired IMPAACT 2001, a multi-country study on the pharmacokinetics, tolerability, and safety of the 3HP regimen in pregnant and postpartum women. See Dr. Mathad's publications on PubMed.

Of special note to this session, Dr. Mathad consulted on Kate O’Brien’s TB diagnosis and treatment while pregnant. We are fortunate to have a survivor-physician dyad for this session and recognize what a powerful experience for them, and for all conference participants, to have them appear together at a national conference!
