Hi, my name is Fatoumata Keita. Before I came to Reading Connections, I had difficulty reading aloud. It was very hard, and I often got stuck. At this time I was still in high school and was not working. My high school French teacher told me about Reading Connections a few years ago. I joined Erik’s group class, and he was very helpful to me. He encouraged me to find a job and helped me many times. Our group worked on reading maps, reading aloud, and other group activities. Sometimes we would even go out to eat and use English! During this time, I went to GTCC, got my CNA certificate, and got a job as a nurse. My reading is much better now, and I am telling my coworkers to come to Reading Connections. If they come, they will be able to improve in math, reading, speaking, and even computer skills. Also, Reading Connections can help you find a job, like they did for me.

UNCG senior Crystal Parks interned this fall at Reading Connections. She worked closely with ABE Coordinator Kiara Coulman in our Greensboro office.

 

During her time with us, Crystal led student orientations, created student summaries based on student test scores, entered data, created flyers for special events, and more. She learned that there is no “one size fits all” approach to student services. “Some students need help with phonics, while others have a higher literacy level and can get through paperwork a bit easier. It’s important to do what works best for the student, not what seems to be the most convenient,” said Crystal.

It is always a pleasure to reflect back on a year's accomplishments. We served more than 1,000 adults and children last year and saw a record-breaking 59% of our post-tested students advance a full literacy level. (This is compared to the average state requirement of 36% of students making such an advancement.)

This summer when we started our new fiscal year, we already had a waiting list of students hoping to join our program and that list continued to grow each week. We decided to kick off a community effort to recruit 50 tutors in 50 days. We began in July and are happy to report that we had many interested volunteers and have almost reached our goal! The need is still great, especially for our ESOL program. Even though our 50 days are up, we can still meet and exceed our goal by the end of the year. If you or someone you know would like to give the gift of literacy, please sign up to be a volunteer tutor. We'd love to have you join our team!
