RHS National Honor Society Inducts New Members
Roxbury High School's National Honor Society inducted 68 new members on November 27th to add to the 58 already existing members.  Students inducted pledged to continue to uphold the four pillars that make up the National Honor Society (NHS) which are scholarship, service, character, and leadership. Once members, students are required to maintain involvement as well as participate in all National Honor Society activities.

The pillar Service plays a strong role in being a member. The National Honor Society is highly concerned with giving its all to the school and community at large and believes service will enrich the lives of others through dedicating their own time to make a difference without compensation.  In order to fulfill the second pillar, that of Scholarship, students must either be a Junior or a Senior with at least 3.75 grade point average and have a minimum of 60 credits.

Students must meet all the criteria in the third pillar of Character. These individuals must be able to take criticism willingly, consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior, upholds principles of morality and ethics, cooperates by complying with school regulations, demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, observes instructions and rules, punctuality, and faithfulness both inside and outside the classroom while actively ridding the school of bad influences.  The final pillar of Leadership looks for students who demonstrate and successfully hold leadership positions of authority in the community and must be dependable and responsible in that role.

This year's inductee group had a great example to learn from, former principal Mr. Jeffrey Swanson, who retired this past June after 15 years of overseeing Roxbury High School. Each year the new inductees nominate a keynote speaker. This speaker is someone who the students believe best represents their group as a whole, and Mr. Swanson was their pick. Roxbury Alumni In the News

Back from Kuwait, a Soldier Visits His Patriotic Roxbury Pen-Pals
When Pennsylvania National Guard Cpt. Joe McLaughlin visited youngsters at the Franklin Elementary School aftercare program this week, it wasn't his first interaction with the kids.  The children and McLaughlin had been pen-pals during the captain's 9-month-long deployment in Kuwait which ended Nov. 18. He said his main reason for visiting the pupils was to thank them for the letters.

"That was pretty much the most important part," said the former 30-year-old former Succasunna resident. "They wanted to say thank you to me for serving overseas and I wanted to say thank you for remembering me."

McLaughlin graduated Roxbury High School in 2006 and went on to graduate from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2010. He received a master's degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2015 and now - in addition to serving in the National Guard - works at Picatinny Arsenal as a civilian software engineer. Broadway Shows Bus Trip to NYC
Choose from two great shows!
Kiss Me, Kate or Disney's Aladdin on Saturday, March 2nd.

Kiss Me, Kate - In the constellation of musical comedy masterpieces, Kiss Me, Kate shines on perhaps Broadway's most sparkling achievement. This is the winner of the first-ever Tony Award® for Best Musical, alive with onstage romance, backstage passion, comedy high and low, a hilarious dash of Shakespeare's Shrew, and the songwriting genius of Cole Porter at his stylish, sexy, sophisticated best. Once again, Roundabout catapults you to a musical comedy heaven, with a brand-new Kiss Me, Kate. In Cole Porter's sparkling 1948 musical, the warring lovers of The Taming of Shrew are causing trouble both onstage and off. While putting on a musical version of Shakespeare's play, exes Fred Graham (Will Chase) and Lilli Vanessi (Kelli O'Hara) can't decide if they're enraged, enamored or enormously confused whenever they cross paths out of character.

Disney's Aladdin - Experience a whole new world in a whole new way! The beloved story is brought to thrilling theatrical life in this bold musical. With just one rub of a magic lamp, Aladdin's journey sweeps you into an exotic world full of daring adventure, classic comedy, and timeless romance. It's an unforgettable experience that includes all the cherished songs from the Academy Award®-winning score and more written especially for Broadway.

This stage production is directed and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Casey Nicholaw, and composed by Tony Award winner Alan Menken. It features lyrics penned by the legendary Howard Ashman and Tony Award® winner Tim Rice, with book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Aladdin  also showcases an incomparable design team with exquisite sets, costumes, and lighting by multiple Tony Award winners Bob Crowley, Gregg Barnes, and Natasha Katz.

The Katz Family's annual Christmas light show is brightening lives with more than just lights. This year, their over-the-top display will benefit a Roxbury police officer fighting a 9/11-related cancer.  Put on by Rob and Melissa Katz, over 40,000 lights dance along to music on the front lawn of their Succasunna home. Visitors are asked to make a donation to benefit Tom DeNicola, a Roxbury police officer and Marine veteran battling multiple myeloma caused by chemical exposures at the World Trade Center in the weeks following 9/11. Up to $500 Fine for Passing Roxbury Firetrucks, Ambulances on Main Street
Motorists who pass a firetruck or ambulance entering or leaving the firehouse in Succasunna will face fines of up to $500, thanks to a new Roxbury ordinance.  The ordinance, approved recently by the Roxbury Mayor and Council, is an attempt ensure the safety of fire and first-aid crews coming and going at the Roxbury Chemical Engine Co. 1 facility on Main Street.  The problem was  first raised a year ago by Roxbury Councilwoman Jaki Albrecht . She said some township first-responders asked if the town could do something to stop drivers from going around ambulances and firetrucks, particularly when the vehicles are returning to the building. Good Weather Fosters Holiday Spirit at Roxbury's 'Home for the Holidays' Event
Decent weather and a good flow of visitors greeted vendors and other participants at the Home for the Holidays celebration in Succasunna on Saturday.  Although rain was predicted, none came. Instead, sunny skies blessed the event's early hours. Clouds that rolled in during the afternoon did little to dampen the spirits of those strolling on Main Street.  Roxbury Councilman Richard Zoschak, helping out at the Santa Land attraction inside the Roxbury Public Library, said the line of kids waiting to be photographed was the longest he could recall. Hundreds came to have their photos taken - by Roxbury Councilman Robert DeFillippo - with Santa. Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury. Roxbury Cops Team with Claus
In addition to fighting crime, Roxbury police will also be battling Christmas Day disappointment this year, it was announced today.  To bolster the effort, the department has partnered with Santa Claus, said the department.

"The police department will be assisting Santa with delivery of gifts this year," the police said on their Facebook page. "We are asking the community to help us by dropping off new, unopened toys. These gifts will be given to families in town who may be struggling this holiday season and the rest will be given to Toys for Tots."

The police department said Roxbury officers will be at police headquarters on Route 46 in Ledgewood through Dec. 20 to accept the unopened gifts and it encouraged children to accompany parents in bringing the items to the police station. The officers on duty "will take the time to thank your child for giving such an important gift and we'll snap a picture to post on our page," the department added. Lake Hopatcong Foundation's new office opening soon in Landing
After nearly two years of renovations and restorations, the non-profit Lake Hopatcong Foundation is just about to move into its new digs.  The new facility, which will feature offices and a community center for meetings and the like, will be located within the stone building on Landing Road in Landing that was for years known as the Lake Hopatcong Train Station. "The bathrooms are done. The front doors are complete, and the tentative move in is set for Dec. 17," said Foundation member Marty Kane, who has overseen the construction and renovation project of the building. Brewery Proposed for Former Roxbury Roller Rink
Are you ready for Ledgewood Lager? How about Port Morris Porter or Succasunna Summer Ale?  A former roller skating rink in Kenvil that hasn't seen skaters in more than three decades is being eyed as a future haven for craft beer lovers, and the would-be proprietor said he would consider naming his creations after places in Roxbury.  Long Valley resident Steven Ashton wants to open a micro-brewery in the building at the former Kenvil Arena, known to locals as simply the "Kenvil Roller Rink." The building, situated on 2.3 acres at 950 Route 46, is owned by the Gruber family, which also owns the Fran's Wicker store in Succasunna.  If the project receives township approval, Ashton would lease the building from the Grubers. Their lawyer, Patrick Dwyer, appeared Wednesday before the Roxbury Planning Board to make a preliminary presentation on the idea called a "concept hearing." Super-Modern Supercenter Planned for Roxbury Walmart
Walmart Inc. wants to upgrade and expand its store at the former Ledgewood Mall in Roxbury, converting it into a more modern "supercenter" that would include drive-through grocery pickup lanes.  The project would be aligned with the ongoing retrofitting of the mall into a new shopping center called  The Shops at Ledgewood Commons , an effort that initially included no plans to change the Walmart store.  "We're in the extremely early stages of going through the approval process, but the plan right now would be to convert that store into a supercenter," said Walmart spokesman Phillip Keene. "There's a bit of a long road (ahead) and we don't want to get too far ahead of the process." Click here to read more from Tap Into Roxbury.

All Roxbury residents are being asked to sign-in to a new "smart" 911 database, especially those who rely solely on cell phones and do not have "copper-wire" home phones.  The new system, unveiled in May by Morris County, allows emergency first-responders to associate addresses with cell phone numbers. It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood.
