Are you that person?
Our board recruits year-round, but at
this time we are particularly focused on recruiting new members for the
2018-19 school year. Are you a parent in the district who can offer a special skill (web design, a second language, fundraising ability, administrative or accounting skills, etc.)?  Do you have a business in San Gabriel and are looking for a way to participate more in the community? Having a child in the school district is not a requirement.

If you think that you or someone you know would like more information about being a SEF board member, please contact Adela Angiuli at 626.451.5465, or visit:  SEFfor8schools.org

President's Update
The San Gabriel Educational Foundation (SEF) has been supporting our public schools for 32 years. With support from Annual Fund donations, we organize programs centered around our focus areas to enhance, enrich and extend the academic initiatives of our schools, most recently with after-school library and computer lab access, Naviance career and college counseling,  assemblies, K-3 music education, training with award-winning authors, cooking and nutrition classes and so much more. We cannot do all of this without the support of our volunteers. Last year alone, our board members and community members dedicated countless hours through partnerships with multiple local organizations. Proudly, we announce our summer academy served approximately 400 students from within and surrounding our community.

Your support of the Annual Fund is critical to the continued success of our projects and workshops offered for the students in our school district. Our deadline for funding this year's new programs is near, and we need your help! In the midst of your Holiday preparations, we ask you to continue your support of our mission with a gift today.  Whether you give $25 or $250, your tax deductible donation to the Annual Fund allows your Foundation to continue offering programs and services to all students in need of our support.

PLEASE DONATE BY DECEMBER 31st!

We hope you are inspired to join our cause and we invite you to please help us make a greater difference in our local school community and donate online today at  www.sef for8schools.org and select Donate Now. Thank you for being a loyal friend and follower of SEF. I truly appreciate your commitment to helping our students into the New Year.

SEF wishes your family love, peace and joy.

Holiday Book Event
San Gabriel Unified families enjoyed an afternoon of fun on Nov. 17 during the San Gabriel Educational Foundation (SEF) Holiday Book Giveaway! Thank you to the San Gabriel Fire Department for hosting the event and to San Gabriel Women's Foundation, Kids Need To Read and the many community partners for the generous funding and donations.
Jefferson Middle School
Hip Hop Dance Class
Recently,  JMS students partici pated in a strong and spirited after school dance class taught by hip hop artist Kelly Sweeney.

SEF believes after school hours are a very important part of a student's day and strives to ensure that program offerings balance and complement each child's academic experience. Over the course of 4 sessions, students enrolled in the SEF Hip Hop series dance class learned an exciting and energetic choreographed dance .  They danced, developing power, personal style, coordination, agility, confidence, focus and memory all while having a blast!

Keeping the beat moving, SEF offered a free Introductory to Hip Hop class on Wednesday, December 12th, which was open to all middle school students. We are excited to share, students who participated in the class left with an increased level of confidence, ability and with the joy of hip hop!
JMS Students are Learning and Creating in the SEF Kitchen!
This fall, 20 students participated in our Fall after school cooking class and had the opportunity to learn culinary skills from Le Cordon Bleu Chef Chris in SEF's on-campus kitchen at JMS. For eight weeks, they experienced cooking healthy & creative dishes from around the world, ranging from North America to Europe to Asia. They also learned about nutrition, food safety, and preparation of the international meals, an experience that left the kids confident in recreating and accepting foods from other countries. What a gift!

Thank you to San Gabriel Community Foundation for the generous grant funding.
"Fun with Tapas"
Culinary Workshop for Adults
Our Tapas workshop, "Tribute to Garlic", on November 30th, was a success! Individuals either sharpened their culinary skills or created new ones, while making three delicious tapas dishes, guided by Le Cordon Bleu Chef Chris. This class provided an environment for community members and friends to get together, learn to create tapas dishes and simply have fun! With raffle prizes and complimentary gifts, no one left empty handed.   What a great evening!

Thank you to San Gabriel Community Foundation for their generous grant funding and Home Depot and Dollar Tree, Pasadena for their generous donation.

Why Do You Support SEF?

In the summer of 2017, I participated in SEF's Kids Fitness Expo.  As a physical therapist,  I had a great time interacting with SGUSD parents and their children and helping with movement analysis for kids and parents with injury.  I am  passionate about giving children the best opportunity to thrive and become well-round individuals, and being part of that experience made me realize how important it is to get involved.  Supporting education is not just about academics, it's also about supporting our children's growth and learning and addressing factors that contribute to their learning.
I support SEF to help with programs that optimize kids' learning experience with literature, music, art, physical and mental health, life skills, and academics that otherwise may not be covered by public funding.

What is Your Favorite Memory from School?

In 4th and 5th grade, I had a teacher named Mr. Estrada and he taught us Spanish songs and games, Ceilito Lindo, La Cucaracha, and Ambo Sado Matarile, respectively. It was my first exposure to learning a different language and culture, and I was intrigued. This experience contributed to me learning Spanish and appreciating other languages and cultures.

What do You Do in Your Free Time?

I look forward to spending time with my family and being outdoors. I love to travel and see new places. I love music and dance, so I hope to incorporate that back into my own life.
