Cloud-Based Electronic Health Care Recoding System- Senior Design Project Sponsored by CHOT

Alexus Eicher, Junaid Jagalur, Matthew Edel, Siddharth Patra, Andrew Rose, and Ajinkya Mukherjee developed the cloud-based  electronic health care recoding system for their senior design project supported by CHOT.

In many medical facilities, a problem doctors face is the difficulty with accessing and entering data into a database. Too much time is spent manually entering information rather than interfacing with patients, leading to customer dissatisfaction. A more advanced application can improve patient experience and facility throughput. These students used a  multi-layer, cloud-based application that can retrieve health care records from a database using a user interface. The objectives of this project are to improve the process for accessing and entering data into a health care database,  to increase patient satisfaction when visiting the doctor's office, and to increase a patient's accessibility to his or her health care records in a secure manner. This project was advised by Raghave Bansal, Dr. Soundar Kumara, and Dr. Hui Yang.

Stochastic Differential Equation Models to Simulate the Opioid Supply Chain Dynamics

Haedong Kim, a CHOT scholar, is developing stochastic differential equation models to simulate flows of the opioid supply chain for optimizing the decision policy to combat the opioid crisis.

Each day, more than 115 Americans die due to overdosing on opioids. Addiction to opioids (including heroin and fentanyl) is a serious national crisis that devastates public health. It is crucial to understand the underlying dynamics of the opioid supply-demand chain to make effective interventions. The stochastic differential equation (SDE)-based simulation models can be used to analyze the opioid supply chain effectively. In this modeling, supply flows of opioids can be treated as continuous, like fluid flowing from one station to another station.  Key factors are gates that control the fluid flow. In the opioid supply chain, gates that control the opioid supply include but not limited to regulations (tax, production limits,  importing limits), pharmacy benefit managers, prescribers, insurance,  treatment services, etc. Simulation models will help assess the effectiveness of gating by various interventions, thereby providing decision support for policy makers.

Additive Manufacturing of Functionally Graded Endoscopic Stent to Reduce Stent Migration in Gastrointestinal Tract

Lindsay Mitchell, a senior in biomedical engineering, is trying to develop a new additive-manufacturing-bases method to produce endoscopic stent under the advice of Dr. Mary Frecker.

Lindsay Mitchell is a senior in biomedical engineering and joined Dr. Frecker's group Spring 2018. They are working on the development of a new endoscopic stent. When a patient has an obstructive tumor in their esophagus, an endoscopic stent is placed in the affected area to open the passageway. When this obstruction occurs in a bent region of the esophagus, the stent tends to migrate to return to a linear position. Dr. Frecker group is studying how functional grading and geometry changes will affect the mechanical properties of the stent and reduce stent migration. One of the more common causes of stent migration is peristalsis. This semester, she will be creating a benchtop study to assess the effects of peristalsis on stent migration and determine which stent geometries perform the best under these conditions.
