INFORMATION FOR PARENTS OF SENIORS

Parents of seniors and seniors themselves should be aware of several factors regarding college and school applications and deadlines. They revolve around two issues: application deadlines and financial aid concerns.

Students and parents should pay close attention to the admissions policies at the schools to which students apply. Schools that have a deadline admissions policy will accept applications generally right up to the deadline. There is no clear advantage for submitting materials early. However, for schools with a rolling admissions policy there is a decided advantage for early submission of application materials since an admission decision is made soon after all materials have been received by the school. Students should check the college and school catalogs and other reference material available in the Guidance Center, the library and on the college's website to be sure what the admissions policies are at various schools.

All seniors who intend to attend a college, trade or vocational school, or business school should apply for financial aid. Pennsylvania students will be able to file for federal and state aid by submitting a single form - The Free Application for Federal Student Aid - (FAFSA). Maryland students also will be eligible for both federal and state scholarship and grant programs if they submit the FAFSA. Students from both states may be required to submit either an institutional financial aid application or the College Scholarship Service Profile Form, or both, depending on the schools to which they apply.

If there are questions about which forms to use, please contact the financial aid officer at the college or school. The federal government will not provide paper FAFSA forms to schools. An individual may receive one by calling 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). Students who apply online (
www.fafsa.ed.gov ) will receive the fastest reply. When applying on-line the guidance department suggests that parents and students use the parent's e-mail address for the FAFSA since all results are sent to the e-mail address listed on the application.

COLLEGE NIGHT
For Juniors and their Parents
On Feb. 13, 2019, the Guidance Department will be hosting a College Planning Session for Juniors and their parents.  Some of the topics covered will include researching colleges, the importance of college visits, the application process, and how to apply for scholarships and financial aid.  We will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.  There will also be plenty of time to have questions answered as well.  Come join us!
Naviance
College and Career Readiness
Over the past several weeks, the Guidance Department visited all students in their Religion classes to introduce Naviance, a program that is new to our school this year.  This College and Career Readiness platform will serve multiple purposes.  First, it will replace the old format that students were required to use to update their Portfolio.  Most importantly, it has a variety of resources for students to explore their interests, research careers and then find post-secondary schools that might have the programs/majors they are interested in.  Encourage your student to log in and show you the features of the program.
STANDARDIZED TESTS
Results Coming Soon
Sophomores and Juniors took the PSAT on Oct. 10. The results of these should be returned to students prior to leaving for Christmas vacation, and they will be asked to bring the results home to parents. Should we, for some reason, not receive them in time to return them to everyone prior to break, we will do so immediately following the Christmas vacation.  If you have any questions regarding test results, please contact one of Delone Catholic's guidance counselors.  To download a PowerPoint presentation to help understand scores, please click HERE.
Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week
Summer Program
Next summer, PA high school students will have the opportunity to participate in Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW). Lycoming College and the Pennsylvania College of Technology, both located in Williamsport, will host the session in July and August of 2019.  PFEW combines rigorous instruction with hands-on experiences, providing participants with the knowledge and skill needed to compete in a 21st Century workforce.  Business leaders from around the commonwealth provide guidance and mentoring opportunities through their participation in PFEW, a collaboration that can impact Pennsylvania's students both today and in the future.  For more information about the program please visit www.PFEW.org.
