A Loss in Our Shaker Community
|
We are sad to share that Woodbury sixth grade teacher, Aisha Fraser,
Class of 1991, tragically lost her life on November 17. She touched so many and will be deeply missed. A memorial fund will be established with the Shaker Schools Foundation to honor Aisha's passion for the Shaker Schools and students. For those who would like to contribute to a fund established by the Shaker Heights Teachers' Association, you may make a contribution

Our Shaker Story: Honoring the Class of 1950/'51

This year's
A Night for the Red & White will pay special tribute to the members of the Shaker Heights High School Class of 1950/'51. Alumni from these classes have worked tirelessly over the past decade with the goal of providing additional academic support for our students. To date, the combined classes have raised more than $290,000 to support initiatives such as a Summer Academy to help academically at-risk students transition successfully to the High School, and a new social and emotional curriculum being piloted at Lomond and Woodbury.
Joan Beyer Levy, who has helped coordinate many of their class reunions, says the secret to their success has come from the bond they feel as class members. "The older we get, the more nostalgic we become. There is a strong sense of shared experience, and it is great to connect again."
Burt Griffin, a retired Cuyahoga County Common Pleas judge, echoes her sentiments. "A lot of us felt that Shaker was the foundation for all the good things that happened in our lives. It really opened doors for us. We had reached a time in our lives when we were ready to give back: it was just the right thing to do."
Recently, the class members had a chance to hear from some of the first classes of high school students who had attended the Summer Academy, most of whom are now headed to college. Says Harry Farmer, "To see the leadership, camaraderie and confidence they developed as a result of the program was very encouraging. It's very rewarding to be a part of their success."
Now, the members of '50/51 hope their actions will inspire other Shaker classes to follow the trail they have blazed. Says Van Seasholes, who worked for many years as a teacher and administrator living on the East Coast, "I would hope that other classes will continue what our class has started. Traditionally, graduates of private schools are asked to contribute. Shouldn't we do the same?"
The Foundation will honor these class members for their dedication with a special presentation at this year's event. We invite you to join us in celebrating their tremendous dedication to the Shaker Schools!

Fernway Forward: A Fundraising Campaign to Restore Fernway School
|
On July 10, 2018, the entire Shaker community was devastated by a fire at Fernway Elementary School. Fortunately, the small number of staff members in the building that day were safely evacuated.
The Bad News
The fire and water damage to the building was severe, and forced the District to relocate Fernway students to other elementary buildings in the District for this school year and next. The roof collapsed, and very little of the building's contents could be salvaged.
The Good News
The community rallied together immediately to start the process to rebuild. Now, a plan is in place to not only restore Fernway to its former glory, but to move it forward with much-needed improvements, such as expanded classrooms, ADA accessibility (including an elevator), a lunchroom/community meeting space, and separate rooms for art, music, and occupational therapy.

Why is Fundraising Necessary?
The insurance settlement for Fernway provides $14.5 million and the District has approved additional spending of $3 million. Those combined funds will cover the basics of Fernway's restoration, but more support is needed to provide the level of excellence needed to carry Fernway forward for the next 100 years.

Now, five months to the date of the Fernway fire, the Shaker Schools Foundation is launching the fundraising campaign. Please help us by supporting the Fernway Forward Campaign by donating online

here. Both methods of donating will support the overall $500,000 fundraising goal.
There are limited opportunities for naming rights associated with the renovation. Gifts of $1,000 or more may be paid over 2-3 years. Please
