December 2018
"I was depressed and anxious and consequently wasn't able to make it into work. After speaking with a volunteer, I was able to gain better perspective, am now at peace with what happened, and am able to see opportunities for growth. I am so glad to have someone from Samaritans here to help me." - Helpline caller
It's as if you are saving the world

Too many of us have had to face the devastating loss of a loved one to suicide.
Please take a look at the video message below from Samantha Joseph, Co-Vice Chair of the Samaritans Board of Directors, who explains how supporting our programs has impacted in her life Together, we can help suicide loss survivors heal and keep other families from feeling the anguish of such a loss - it's as if you are saving the world.
As If You're Saving the World

Today, your donation will be matched by two generous donors. They have challenged us to raise $50,000 for suicide prevention by the end of the year. We are so grateful for your support in ensuring Samaritans is here whenever we are needed.
A warm welcome to our newest volunteers
This friendly group of faces represents the most recent class of crisis center volunteers! We're thrilled to welcome this bunch who will answer calls and texts to our Helpline. Congratulations to our new volunteers on completing their training!

We need your help to meet the needs of our callers and texters! Each day, people who struggle with loneliness, depression, or suicidal feelings turn to us for support. If you're interested in joining the Samaritans volunteer community, click the button below to learn more.
Mario Umana Academy

Our entire Community Education and Outreach team visited the Mario Umana Academy in East Boston this month! The 6th grade class at this K-8 school discussed how to help someone who may be struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts. We were so impressed with the students' insight and participation.  Working with Middle School Guidance Counselor  Zayda Gonzalex, LCSW, our team brought our suicide prevention curriculum to 165 students!

The relationship with the Mario Umana Academy developed from the Bullying Intervention Specialist Training offered by Boston Public Schools. Samaritans is one of many esteemed organizations that is part of this 14-hour professional development training offered to teachers and school administrators to effectively address bullying prevention and intervention across the city.  We are so grateful to be a part of this effort to improve the wellness of youth in the Commonwealth!
Attend the Annual Memorial

Samaritans' Annual Memorial allows us to come together to remember and honor our loved ones whom we have lost to suicide.  Those who attend range from people who have suffered a recent loss to  people who are remembering a loved one lost years ago. It is an opportunity to reconnect, support one another, and share memories.

The program will take place on Sunday, January 27, 2019 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church at 630 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington Center.

Everyone is welcome to participate in the non-denominational service -  whether through submitting a song, a poem, or a letter for the event's program,  or simply by being present.
Philanthropy on the Field

We are so excited to announce that we were chosen as a recipient of a $11,662 grant from the Learning by Giving Foundation! Nearly 200 young professionals gathered at Fenway Park  during the Philanthropy on the Field event on December 1 to  learn how to use their time, treasure, and talent to support nonprofits in Boston. Throughout their day, participants met with volunteer representatives from different organizations to decide how to allocate more than $100,000 in grant funds. Special shout-out to our volunteer Gita and Board member Kacy for representing Samaritans! Thank you to the Learning by Giving Foundation and the participants of Philanthropy on the Field for recognizing and acknowledging the impact Samaritans has on the community!
