COACH'S CORNER

Brandon Alguire is Head Coach of the Provincial Team at ACE Burlington and a Coach Developer for Tennis Canada. He is responsible along with TTC coach Andy Sutton for ACE's System Development.

The indoor competitive season is just around the corner as it starts in January and for many players that means they will be playing a lot of the bigger tournaments in their schedule. There are a few players who thrive in this competitive environment but many struggle to deal with the stress and pressure they put on themselves when competing. The link below is Ivan Ljubicic discussing Fear. Ljubicic is a former top 5 in the world player and now coaches Roger Federer. He certainly know something about fear and I think his advice is bang on.

Team HEAD - Ivan Ljubicic's Insights: Fear

I have worked on this aspect of fear in myself for a long time and one book that very much helped me understand how to have the proper perspective is called "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway" by Susan Jeffers. It's a short read but excellent in the way it describes fear and teaches you that there is actually no such thing as failure, there's only feedback. I would highly recommend it.

If you're looking for a good read on fear in tennis specifically, I came across an article which you can access HERE.

Good luck to all tournament competitors in the New Year. Stay tough mentally, and you'll give yourself the best chance to win!
