"Lifelong Learners: Students and Stewards" is now on display in The Gallery at Three Rivers.  This show  is a collaboration with the Adventures in Lifelong Learning students and faculty and staff at the College and includes selections of their work. 

The show runs through January 30, 2019.

CSCU Board of Regents Release Student Success KPIs
The first annual CSCU report on Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for student success was released on November 1.  The CSCU Board of Regents have determined that this report will be disseminated each year to the faculty,  staff, and administrators of all CSCU community colleges. The report is presented jointly by the CSCU Student Success  and the CSCU Office of Research and System Effectiveness. 

The report focuses on short-term KPIs that have been demonstrated nationally to correlate with completion. This includes measures of credit momentum (attempting 15 credits in the first semester), gateway momentum (passing college-level math and English in year one), and program momentum (passing nine hours in the student's major/area of study in year one).
Three Rivers Nursing Program Accreditation Continued
The nursing department  received notification from the ACEN 
(Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing) Evaluation site report that the Three Rivers Nursing program be continued in accreditation.

Congratulations to Edie Ouellet and all the members of the nursing department for all their efforts in preparing the comprehensive report and for their involvement in the successful completion of the team visit this fall. Good work! 
Congratulations Professor Frederick-Douglass Knowles II Hartford's First Poet Laureate 
Associate Professor Frederick-Douglass Knowles II has been named Hartford's First Poet Laureate. In this role, he will promote awareness and appreciation of poetry, spoken word, and writing in Hartford; and endeavor to instill pride in the community.

President Mary Ellen Jukoski congratulated Knowles on the appointment saying, "This is a wonderful honor for Associate Professor Knowles. We take pride in his positive achievement and wish him continued success on this auspicious occasion."  Read more here  and here . 
Veterans honored with Purple Heart Dedication and Field of Flags 
On Monday, November 12, Three Rivers Community College dedicated two newly-designated Purple Heart parking spaces. The spaces are reserved parking for students, faculty and staff who have been awarded the Purple Heart. The College also honored TRCC community veterans with a breakfast and Honor the Fallen, Field of Flags. Over 300 flags were purchased by the community for $1 each and were planted in honor of their loved ones on the cafeteria green.  Read more here.
Three Rivers Community Pulls Together with Thanksgiving Drives
Since gaining a new permanent location in 2017, the use of The Full Plate Food Pantry has greatly increased. They continued their annual efforts this year and  supplied 30 Thanksgiving dinners to food-insecure students of the Three Rivers community this year.  Read more here.

The Veterans Organization of Three Rivers donated 80 Thanksgiving dinners to the Norwich Veterans Center, which is a huge increase from previous years. Marie Parry, president of the Three Rivers  Veterans Organization, was the driving force behind the drive and worked to include other student organizations.  Read more here.  
Breakfast with the Brass a Delicious Success
Students had an opportunity to mingle with the administration on November 13 during Breakfast with the Brass. It was a great turnout. Below Dean Finton chats with a student. 
Native American Month recognized with a talk and performance
To celebrate Native American Month, the Equity and Diversity Committee hosted the Mohegan Tribe's Cultural and Community Programs office.  Representatives talked about customs and traditions, as well as performed a traditional blanket dance on November 28. Watch it here. 
Advising Days Generates a Great Start for Registration
Advising Days were a success! 265 students were advised and registered in the multipurpose room on November 1 and November 5. Thank you to the faculty for their participation as well as the Registrar, Financial Aid and Cashier support services.
Three Rivers hosts Eastern Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program of 2020
The Leadership program visits different organizations each month, and November's focus was on education. Part of the program included a panel discussion on individual leadership styles and how they embrace non-traditional students and veterans. Kenneth Briggs, Three Rivers Director of Financial Aid, was part of the panel along with Dr. John F. McKnight Jr. from Connecticut College, and Michael Buccilli, the Guided Pathways leader in the CSCU System. 
Brian Dimmock appears on A+E "Knife or Death"
Adjunct Art Professor Brian Dimmock appeared on TV again on a recent episode of "Knife or Death" that aired on November 7. Last year, he was also featured on an episode of "Forged in Fire."  Congrats Brian! 
News from Three Rivers College Foundation 
Two Request for Funds Approved
The Foundation approved two Request for Funds for the College this month:
  • The Community Support & Involvement Committee has been awarded $2,500 to support Men against Domestic Violence, poetry readings, Empty Bowls and Student Cyber Music Series.
  • Workforce and Community Education has been awarded $5,000 to provide funding for spring 2019 students who are unable to afford tuition, books or supplies for their coursework.
Support for the Nursing Program
At the November Foundation board meeting, Professor Joan Graham, Nursing, presented a detailed outcomes report on various initiatives the Foundation has funded for the nursing department over the course of the past few years.
 
The Nursing Department recently completed an accreditation site visit this September. The Foundation provided funding for a professional accreditor to review their portfolio to ensure a successful site visit. The accrediting body gave a resoundingly positive review.
 
The Foundation also funded a new classroom technology, iClickers. These clickers allow the faculty to pose questions to the students and gage the comprehension among the class. Faculty can then alter their lesson to address any learning gaps. This technology is particularly helpful for NCLEX review. The nursing program recently had a 100% NCLEX pass rate.
 
Nursing students are continuing a successful site visit program at St. Vincent DePaul in Norwich that originated through Foundation funding. This program allows nursing students to provide care in a community setting alongside residents, physicians and pharmacy students.
 
Finally, the success of the standardized patient simulation program funded by the Foundation continues. Paid actors create a mass casualty scenario through the direction of the nursing faculty that allows students a chance to experience a complex triage situation. A student must successfully navigate multiple components that can only be provided through this hands-on experience.
