A "Must" stop for either ICW or offshore cruisers, 2018-04-20

Captain:  Mike Zimet, ORIENTAL
5-Stars

Southport Marina offers a first class experience. Great docks (although passing traffic can make it bit rolly during the day), experienced dock hands, a great welcome package, and clean and accessible showers and laundry, close access to provisioning and good eats, and perhaps the best reason to stop is the nightly weather and navigation brief given by retired USN Meteorologist Hank Pomeranz. I have attended 4 briefings over the past several cruising seasons and these briefs and the user friendly handout are simply indispensable. Kudos to Southport and Zimmerman for their sponsorship. Even for those vessels not cruising the ICW, the offshore aspects of the weather and navigation briefs are helpful for route planning and crew peace of mind. Southport is a great stop and made mandatory due to the ICW migration season briefings (Spring and Fall migration seasons).

I am a bit reluctant to give them five stars because they might become so popular that I might have a problem reserving a slip in the future. It's a great marina and a lovely town.

The ONLY negative about this marina is that at times it can be exposed to wind-generated wave action. Otherwise, the entire staff is very professional and willing to accommodate. Facilities such as the showers, laundry room, ship store, fuel dock, picnic and gathering areas are extremely well looked after. The downtown area is a convenient walk to the North Carolina Maritime Museum, cafes, stores, and numerous restaurants. A great location to have friends or family come to spend some time with you while you're cruising.

Yes this place costs more (but not outrageous). But the location can't be beat if you want to see Southport, or just eat out.

If you arrive when the dock crew is there, you are in luck as the guys are the best and very skilled. They try to leave the south facing open till the last as it is easiest to get into unassisted if the dock crew have gone home. This spot can be a little rocky as it is open to the ICW and the south breeze, so use use a few extra bumpers for a peaceful night.

The laundry was clean and working. Wifi at the end of the dock was weak, but OK up by the laundry (if you want to stream a movie while the cloths cycle through the wash.)

Wifi strength was only complaint.

Not only is this marina well appointed and close to town, the staff is amazingly helpful. Not to be missed is a FREE seminar each night on what to expect in navigating the Cape Fear River and the ICW up to Norfolk. Hank gives full weather forecasts and areas to beware of for your trip. These seminars are every night for two weeks in the spring and again in the fall.

Thank you for all the positive feedback from our slip holders and transient customers we have been receiving on Active Captain, Waterway Guide, and Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net...please continue to let us know how we are doing!

Recent reviews of our onsite service provider by one of their many satisfied customers, courtesy of the ActiveCaptain community:

"Silver lining to a bad situation"
June 23, 2018

"I cannot praise Zimmerman Marine enough for the professional way I was dealt with while having repairs made to my "new" boat on my way up North on the ICW.

Yard master Steve Wallace and his team of professionals instilled a sense of calm in what could have been a major personnel storm. During some needed repairs due to an unexpected grounding, a dangerous condition was spotted that was due to improperly installed new engines. The misaligned engines would certainly not have made the rest of the trip to Long Island. I lost precious time, but now my boat is safe to continue.

Acting as our advocate, Steve spoke to the mechanic who had installed the engines and he agreed to pay for the repairs. (There are still good people out there)

While the details at this time are unimportant, I came away feeling blessed that I was recommended to Zimmerman Marine and Steve Wallace and his team. A more professional group of people I have not come across. (Southport Marina was great also) Thank-you Steve and to your team."

"Best yard service in Southeast"
July 9, 2018

"Steve and crew are the best on the southeast coast. Experienced major prop shaft issues due to bad work at yard work further south. Steve diagnosed the issues, like an experienced surgeon, and helped get us up and going on our trip back north. We cruise the Chesapeake during the summer season, and will definitely consider Zimmerman Marine (VA) as a result at the superb service and work at Zimmerman Marine (Southport)"

"The Ritz Carlton of Marine Services"
June 14, 2018

"If possible, we recommend you go out of your way to get to Zimmerman Marine's Southport, NC service and repair faciltiy.

We experienced electronics and mechanical (squealing engine belt and sump pump) issues as well as needing a minor fiberglass repair.

One call to Zimmerman Marine, Southport became our complete solution. Steve Wallace, the Yard Manager, listened to our needs and agreed to meet us on a Saturday. (The stated business hours are Mon. - Fri.). We arrived much later than anticipated - 3:00 p.m. rather than noon - 1:30 p.m. The Southport Marina dockmaster told us Steve stayed until a bit after 2:30 p.m.

I sent a text to Steve apologizing for our late delivery, stating I hoped to see him on Monday. He came to the boat the next day - Sunday!. He spent time with us to get a scope on our needs and gave us an on-the-spot game plan to get us on our way. The plan was implemented before 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Further since Steve's judgment was that our issues were under warranty (new boat) he volunteered to act as the intermediary with the factory. Steve secured approval for the warranty items from the manufacturer, provided a contact for the engine manufacturer, offered the use of a complimentary vehicle (pick-up truck) and arranged for the fiber glass repair via one of his trusted sub-contractors. As an aside at one point in time when the complimentary vehicle wasn't available, he offered us the use of his personal car (it had less than 240 miles on the odometer).

We also want to comment on two of Steve's crew - Hannah and "J". Hannah works the office and "J" was our assigned problem solver.

Hannah was our first point of contact and instrumental in gettng us in touch with Steve, almost immediately, She made the courtesy vehicle available on demand and performs other office functions.

"J" impressed us as being caring, thorough, problem solving oriented and highly empathetic. He resolved our electronics and sump pump issues, updated our chartplotter software and reprogrammed one of our AC thermostats (The engine belt was a manufacturer warranty matter.)

Within a few days were able to continue our northward cruise toward The Chesapeake Bay. This is somewhat of a long reviiew, yet we feel it's important to detail why we titled it "The Ritz Carlton of Marine Service"."
