Ben and Jerry finally adopted!
Ben and Jerry, who have been blind since birth and in a SAFCC foster home for ALMOST FIVE YEARS have been finally adopted!
Ben and Jerry were found on a trapping project September 2014. When SAFCC trapper Lorraine first saw the litter of three 2-week old babies, she thought they looked like aliens because their eyes were so infected they were bulging out of their head. Lorraine cancelled vacation plans to care for these guys.
Unfortunately, the female kitten did not survive as she was in the worst condition. CCAP foster Amanda then took over fostering for these two guys, taking them through their costly eye surgery paid for by a CCAP fundraiser, promoting these guys at adoption events, and even putting them on a local TV show to get them exposure!
Ben and Jerry have come a long way and finding them a home has been a long road for Amanda. "
It's bittersweet for me. I LOVE those two boys," Amanda said. "I was worried when they arrived that they wouldn't survive but they were tough little guys. They never knew they were different because they had been born that way. I never expected to have them almost 5 years. I had resigned myself to the likelihood that they'd never be adopted but I'm so thrilled that someone CHOSE them. They are such sweet babies and I'll miss them and love them always. Their new family is wonderful and I pray they have many amazing years to enjoy their company." The boys' new family had specifically wanted to give a home to special need cats and adults since most people adopt kittens

SAFCC and Six Flags Fiesta Texas make a purrfect partnership
Six Flags Fiesta Texas called the SAFCC helpline seeking 10 cats for rodent control around their warehouse. Feral cats, if properly relocated, can make excellent "barn cats" and keep rodent populations to a minimum. SAFCC volunteers worked with Fiesta Texas to carry out a successful relocation
beginning
with finding the right cats to relocate.
Some time before, SAFCC had received a call from a
n elderly woman's son reaching out for help. His mom had fallen and ended up in a nursing home. She had been feeding 14 cats, none of which were fixed. Unfortunately the new resident of the house hated cats and sabotaged any attempts for neighbors or volunteers to feed by yelling and throwing away food and water bowls. These cats were not safe here. However, if these cats could be fixed, they would be perfect to relocate to the safe confines of Fiesta Texas.
Two SAFCC trapper team members, Joe Nabers and Marilyn Dunkle stepped up to trap in 100-degree heat on a Thursday and transported the cats the next day for surgery at ACS. While the cats recovered from surgery, the relocation spot was checked out and the correct protocol was reviewed. On Sunday, our van was loaded with 12 cats for the trip to their new home! Volunteers at the amusement park were so excited and started naming the cats immediately. Fingers and paws crossed for a successful relocation! Fiesta Texas agreed to take 12 cats instead of 10 and the remaining two cats were fixed and returned to a neighbor who will continue to feed. This is a happy ending for all! Free spay/neuter surgery for 300 community cats in 78247
Thanks to the Petco Foundation grant, 300 community cats in the 78247 zip code can receive free spay/neuter surgery. Cats must be brought in a covered trap to either the Animal Defense League, the San Antonio Humane Society or Brooks Spay & Neuter Clinic. Proof of residency is required such as a driver's license or bill. This grant began May 2019 and will continue until the end of the year or number is reached. Cats will also receive a rabies vaccination and ear-tip.

SAFCC Cat of the Month: Suzi
Suzi was rescued shortly before she gave birth to 6 sweet little kittens. Suzie and her Banshees are now all spayed/neutered, vaccinated, combo tested, and microchipped and ready to find their forever homes! We expect Suzi's kittens to be adopted quickly, because they are kittens. But Suzi would also love to have a forever home! She would do well as an only cat, although she could do well with one other cat, if introduced slowly, so she feels safe.

Austin Highway Petco needs volunteers
Our SAFCC Austin Highway Petco Cat Habitat is in desperate need of the following volunteer coverage:
1) The second and fourth Friday of each month.
2) The first, third and fifth Saturdays of each month.
3) Back-up volunteers who step in and cover almost any day of the week. This person usually covers when we have a regular volunteer out sick or out on vacation, etc.
This Petco cat habitat located at 1211 Austin Highway, is run only by SAFCC volunteers. The cats coming into the cubbies are approved/vetted and placed there by our fosters. There are several cubbies at each of the cat habitats that provide a great opportunity to find families for our cats and also alleviate the strain of some from our cat fosters. As a volunteer, your responsibility is to keep the habitats clean, feed and play with the cats. Volunteers dedicate 1-2 hours one day a week. Petco kindly provides the space, SAFCC provides the training and supplies, but the volunteers do all the cleaning and care of the cats while they are there. Track your tax-write off expenses throughout the year
We are at the halfway point as 2019 is half gone! Continue tracking your receipts for unreimbursed expenses related to your care of community cats. Remember, this really adds up! For tax year 2018, eleven people came to the SAFCC office to pick up a letter verifying their community/ feral cat expenditures. In total, these 11 people had $42,994.27 in unreimbursed expenses!
