English Learners Celebration
On November 29th, we had a celebration for the multilingual students who graduated from our English Language Learners program. Staff from the elementary schools and the middle school honored these students with certificates and celebratory notes. This year there are 18 students, representing six languages, who achieved proficiency in academic English on the ACCESS test. Learning a language requires persistence, risk-taking, and communication skills. Congratulations to these students!
Gifted Education News
December 2018

7th and 8th grade GT students recently finished a Supreme Court Simulation Unit.

Students prepared for Supreme Court Simulations by researching one of these landmark Supreme Court Cases:
Nebraska Press Association v Stuart (1976)
Tinker v Des Moines School District (1969)
New Jersey v T.L.O. (1985)
Students reviewed the role of the U.S. Supreme Court and the rights granted in the Bill of Rights.
Students assumed the role of Justice or Attorney.
Students who were attorneys prepared briefs in a shared document.
Justices worked on a shared document as they researched the case and created questions surrounding the amendments each side would be arguing for in the court simulation.
Attorneys and Justices prepared Supreme Court Case Summary Worksheets to help them organize their arguments and facts of the case.

I hope you enjoy these pictures! Thank you for all your support for these wonderful students! I love being their teacher.

Cultural Attaches in the Middle School
The Spanish cultural attaches (students using their language to benefit themselves and others) had lunch together this week. It's a Spanish only lunch and this week we had visitors: Yrak Saenz and Carmen Rudin. Students spoke Spanish, Portuguese and Catalon as we talked with and supported some new students to the Middle School who only speak Spanish. Other groups of cultural attache's include: French, Arabic, Swahili and Russian. In IB World Schools students are encouraged to use their native language and develop further fluency in other World languages.
Boys2Men Group
The St Louis Park School District’s Strategic Plan is focused on equitable educational outcomes for all students, with a mission to ensure each student feels welcome and included in our community. Because of this, we are offering a leadership group for our black boys called Boys2Men. The purpose of this group is to create a safe space to talk about race, build positive relationships and create a deeper sense of self-identity.

De’Ante Michaud and Darrell Young will facilitate these groups. Groups for 6th & 7th grade will be held every Thursday for 30 minutes in place of their Discovery class. The eighth grade group will meet on Tuesdays during the school day on a rotating period basis. Mr. Michaud and Mr. Young will lead group discussions defining and developing positive self-identity. Group sessions will include community building activities, time for self-reflection, possible guest speakers and other activities that create a safe, supportive space to explore self-identity and race.

If you would like your student to participate in the Boys2Men group, please sign and return a permission form to the Middle School Student Services office. Permission forms can be picked up in the Middle School Student Services Office or click here for a form . There is limited space in each group. Groups will start December 11 and 13.

Reminder, please do not drop off students on the West side of Texas in the morning. When students are dropped off on the West side they then have to walk across traffic. This makes for dangerous conditions as many drivers are solely focused on the challenging vehicle traffic and not pedestrians.

Thank you!

Contribute To This Year's Yearbook
St. Louis Park Middle School has new advisers for the 2018-19 yearbook.  We, Maria Johnson and Lisa Becker, are excited about the opportunity to help gather memories for your students, but we would love to have your help!
The best yearbooks are filled with many photos of a variety of events and students; learning, performing, competing and having fun. We have an easy way for you to share photos of our Middle Schools students in their co-curricular activities, so that we have many to choose from.
Our yearbook company, Josten’s, has created RePlayIt, a free app to share photos with us. You can find it in the App Store or in Google Play Store to download to your mobile phone. We gave it a try and it works great!  All we did was download the app, registered with St. Louis Park Middle School and took some photos to share. Thank you for helping capturing the moments of our students’ year!
Site Council
The next Site Council Meeting is January 9, 2019 at 3:45 p.m. in the Media Center.

Washington D.C.
D.C. Trip, 2019:
We've been given a great opportunity to listen to a guest speaker before our trip this year! A former docent at the Holocaust Museum will be speaking to our group on  Tuesday, March 19, at 7:00 P.M.  in the Middle School Media Center classrooms. This is not a required meeting, but all D.C. Trip families are invited to attend. The docent will be able to give the group so much more information and history than our typical WorldStrides tour guides or I can provide! Please consider attending this special event!

Also, if your student is interested but you haven't registered yet, there's still time! Families can register through mid-March and still travel with us this year. Please contact David Burr at   [email protected]   or  (952) 928-6375  for registration details.
