We have already closed out the first month of 2020 and are now poised for a successful start to February on Monday!
Our regular readers know that we consistently keep a close eye on several weekly statistics that either directly
or indirectly affect student achievement (please see table at the bottom).
For January, we would like to congratulate our 7th grade Knights as they had the fewest weekly tardies to school (only 8 per week), the fewest weekly tardies between classes (only 10 per week), and did the most reading for pleasure as measured by library activity (82 books per week vs. the next grade level at 47 books per week). Thank you to our 7th grade parents for their at-home support here and we encourage all parents in February to help encourage their student(s) to be on time and to read for pleasure 20 minutes every day.
On the importance of reading for pleasure, please remember that
Ms. Powers, our media specialist, runs a terrific Sunshine State Young Readers Awards (SSYRA) program that involves 15 of the most popular books with students from across Florida backed up by an exciting student recognition program that I would like to see all of our students actively involved in.
Here is the list of books on the 2019-2020 SSYRA list.
I was also very pleased to see that our leadership team kept up the pace during January in terms of classroom visits averaging 94 per week despite two four-day weeks due to week #1 of the year with no school on a Monday (Jan. 6) and the MLK Holiday (Jan. 20) plus a senior administrator being temporarily away on leave. Our school buses also enjoyed a successful January averaging a 99% on-time rate in the mornings and 98% in the afternoons. Finally, a tip of the hat to our dedicated educators as their weekly attendance rate averaged 97% per week last month. That is a very strong showing by either public or private sector standards and sets a fine example for our young Knights.

Two weekends ago, 10 of our band students participated in the OCPS Middle School All-County Honor Band! These students were selected to play with this prestigious performing ensemble through a very rigorous audition process. Being selected for this group is a huge honor!!!

Math Club Competition Highlights
The LNMS Math Club participated in the Math League Competition at Heathrow Elementary. We are proud to announce the following students placed in the competition:

Sixth Grade Science with Ms. Fountaine
In Ms. Fountaine's 6th grade science class, students extracted DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) from strawberries. Scientists study DNA for many reasons; maybe one day these students will make new medicines or genetically modify crops to be resistant to insects. Maybe these students' future begins here!

This past Wednesday our basketball teams traveled to Meadow Woods for their second games of the season.
The Lady Knights defeated Meadow Woods 36-7. Leading our Knights in scoring was
Soliel DeJesus with 12 points and
Aliana Quesada with 9.
Our boys basketball team started off the game with a great lead. However, Meadow Woods did not back down. This game ended up going into three overtimes! With 4.8 seconds left on the clock our Knights were down 34-36. 8th grader
Dionel Cruz got fouled at the 3 point and converted making ALL THREE of his free throws and winning the game for our Knights with a final score of 37-36.
This week both teams travel to Hunter's Creek Middle School on Monday and Westridge Middle School on Wednesday. Good luck to both of our teams as they hit the road!

Last week, students from the Drama Club attended a matinee performance of the National Broadway Tour of Aladdin at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Michael James Scott's performance as the Genie was extra special because he is an Orlando native and OCPS alumnus!
