Center Spotlight: Vangela Box
Meet Vangela Box, front desk customer service assistant at Norpoint.

Vangela has been working at the Center since November of 2009 - just over 10 years!

She started as a swim instructor, then lifeguard, and then became the Norpoint Pool Manager. Finally, she decided it was time for a change and moved to the front desk.

Most days, Vangela is up and at the front desk, getting to know all the members and helping them anyway she can, before the sun is up.

“Good thing I am a morning person,” she said.

When Vangela and her family first moved from California, she was looking to get out more with her six-month old baby so she enrolled in Parent/Child Swimming lessons.

“I happen to be wearing one of my lifeguard swimsuits from a past job one day,” she recalled.

The Norpoint swim instructor asked her about it, Vangela shared her experience teaching swimming and lifeguarding since she was 14, and then the instructor asked if she’d be interested in working at Norpoint.

“And the rest is history,” she said. “I love the people and community. I love the small town feel.”

Vangela knows what a small town is; she grew up in a Northern Utah town called Fielding, population 500.
Over the years at Norpoint, Vangela became close to a group of ladies working at the pool who decided to train and do a sprint triathlon together.

“It was so fun training together and encouraging one another,” she said. “I wasn’t the fastest, and it was so hard, but I did finish … I accomplished something I am proud of.”

In her free time, Vangela enjoys reading, swimming, traveling, camping, hiking and spending time with her family of five; Her husband of 15 years, Jason, and her two sons (ages 10 and 9) and 5-year-old daughter.

Jason and Vangela met in college in Utah, got married and moved to Huntington Beach where they lived for 3 years enjoying the beach and Disneyland, then moved with his job to Tacoma.

“We love it here, it feels like home,” she said.
Thank you for dedicating more than a decade to us, Vangie!
We appreciate having you on our team at Metro Parks Tacoma.
Members of the Month:
Judith and Dennis Opacki
Meet Judith and Dennis Opacki, Norpoint’s Members of the Month for February.

A Detroit boy and a small town girl from Michigan, the Opacki’s have been married for 53 years. Both were born in Michigan; Dennis joined the U.S. Navy after high school and Judith went to the University of Michigan, where she earned a bachelor’s in English and her teaching certificate.
Once he left the military, Dennis attended the University of Michigan where he met Judith, attending the institution again, this time to take business administration courses.
A year later, Dennis attended the University of Illinois law school and Judith wrote articles for a University of Illinois economic and business publication and worked for Journal of Marketing Research.
In January of 1969, the two made the cross-country move to Seattle after looking at cities all over the nation. They had just a car full of their things, a few paychecks and their education.
In addition Dennis joined the US Navy JAG Reserve, later retiring as a Commander.
“We came out here sight unseen,” Judith said. They settled in Seattle, where Dennis worked as a lawyer and Judith as an atmospheric sciences research group administrator after she earned her MBA.
The couple became members of the Center three years ago after moving to the area.
“I like the multigenerational approach,” Judith said of the facility, noting her appreciation for the Kids Club, the after school program for middle school students, the holiday festivals and events, senior fitness classes and the new ping pong tables open for all skill levels.
From morning catch ups over coffee in the lobby to the pickleball program, Norpoint creates “a friendly environment and you’re invited to stay a while,” she said.
Judith, a lifelong tennis player, enjoys the S.A.I.L class, while Dennis, who now uses a wheelchair, practices walking with his caregiver at Norpoint.
If you see the Opacki’s around the Center, be sure to say hello and offer congratulations as the February Members of the Month!
