Volunteers of the Week
UW-Extension Master Gardeners Children's Edible Garden Volunteers are our Volunteers of the Week!

The mission of the N.E.W. Master Gardeners' Association is to provide horticultural support and leadership to individuals, local organizations and community programs through volunteerism, education and environmental stewardship. The association’s mission is also to assist the local University of Wisconsin-Extension (UWEX) horticultural program. It is solely through the efforts of the UW-Extension Master Gardener volunteers that the Brown County Library is able to have such a wonderful Children's Edible Garden and provide garden programs for our community.

In the garden at the Central Library, the Master Gardeners plan, plant, water, weed, and complete everything else needed to keep the garden beautiful and vibrant. Through their efforts, the Brown County Library has been able to welcome hundreds of children and their families into the garden each year, teach them a bit about where their food comes from, provide early literacy opportunities and send them home with some delicious fruits and vegetables. They are also able to share the abundance of the garden with library patrons who are welcome to take home freshly picked vegetables.

The group leader and the group of Master Gardeners have continued to add features and update the garden to keep it interesting and fresh. In the summer of 2018, the Master Gardeners added some art elements for visual appeal and planted many unusual vegetables for the children to explore. They also cleaned up an area just outside of the garden-proper, which was no easy task, and replaced the weeds and stones with a couple of apple trees and sedums. The apple trees will not only provide the Brown County Library with tasty fruit and much needed shade, but they will also provide more learning opportunities for the kids that come to the garden programs. This extra effort completely transformed the landscaping on that side of the library and the library patrons have loved it.

The Master Gardeners are already planning what they want to grow in the garden this year and what improvements they want to make. It is heartening to see the dedication and care of these individuals. They really take ownership of the garden and treat it with the same love and attention that they would their own home garden. This does not go unnoticed by library staff and library patrons. Seeing that bright, beautiful garden just out our front door raises everyone’s spirits. Knowing that the Master Gardener volunteers have other community projects to choose from, and seeing them choose our garden each year makes it extra special.

Thank you, Master Gardeners, for treating the Children's Edible Garden as if it were your own!
